i am around the 25th percentile for my school (75% GPA though) and am top 20%

however ive had to grind my ass off to get to 20% and it's easy to tell that peeps on LR are significantly smarter than me

it really sucks to have to work so hard to beat the mean

It doesn't mean that the avg 170 scorer will do better in law school or at a law firm than the average 165 scorer, but there's a noticeable difference in terms of general intelligence.

What do you mean by "average"?

Statistically, they'd likely be far above an IQ of 100. For example, the universities that have high-150s LSAT averages are far above average universities, and college students are above the population's average.

This. All of those people that I know who did poorly on the LSAT took the test once. Some of them took prep courses, some of them didn't. But all of them have some story about test day like "I had to take a massive shit and they wouldn't let me out of the room and that messed up my focus". One girl showed up hung over (or claimed to) and got in the low 160s, but somehow she still got into my law school. She graduated with honors and scored Vault 20 biglaw, too.

LOL.

Assuming a minimal floor of preparation, LSAT is an extremely good indicator of general intelligence.

I loved the LSAT. I wouldn't mind taking it 20 times. Too bad everything after that is absolutely horrible by comparison, such as law school, the bar exam, and working. I loved just being a whiz kid. Grinding sucks.

so you're not so sure because you know of an exception to the claimed correlation between LSAT and intelligence

not so sure that LSAT determines law school performance. i think it is probably a very good indicator of intelligence.

I am probably one of the highest LSAT scores in my school (7 points above the 75th %) and still only slightly above median.

I would agree that it tests intelligence to an extent

However, for the last few months I had been counseling a friend who was preparing to take the LSAT, and I began to realize that my strategy toward taking the test was kinda perverse. For the most part, I helped him with reading comp and occasionally logical reasoning.

I kept telling him that, for any given problem, you eliminate the two or three (I forget if it's usually 4 or 5 possible answers) that are obviously wrong, and then when you're left with the right answer and the plausible wrong answer, you try to think of the ways in which the makers of the test are trying to trick you. Then once you've detected their stratagem, you eliminate the last wrong answer.

Somehow I feel that this is not the best way to test for intelligence. At a certain point with test prep, you're basically just reverse engineering the damn test to arrive at answers.

Note however that this may not apply to the logic games.

Yes, but you learn to deconstruct the test through prep and experience. It's not necessarily the best indicator of raw intelligence.
