To make any money you'll need to learn the ropes for several years at an awful salary and eventually hang your own shingle and hope for the best. The latter part is particularly tough to stomach and if things go wrong you're stuck with nothing.
I suggest looking at med mal defense side. There are some firms in NYC that specialize in defending docs on behalf of their insurers. Salaries start at around 75k in MFH and there is room for upward mobility. |

Having litigation experience on your resume with good references can mean you can quit this job after a year and move elsewhere or stay and demand an increase in salary. You could also move to similar firms or go out of PI entirely...door is pretty wide open in the beginning of your legal career I'd think. I got an offer with legal aid but didn't take it because I was worried the impression it'd give to future firms - not sure your job carries the same stigma (I'm going to be working with small firm that does corporate/commercial litigation instead but I hate corporate so will see if I can tolerate & how much I like firm.
