So I'm listening michael sandel's lectures on justice while doing some busywork, and he takes questions and comments from the audience pretty frequently. to a man, all these people are complete idiots. I feel like I'm back at my old lower t1 that I transferred out of again listening to this shit. there's the guy who got MAF when sandel described Rawls and is all like, "i DESERVE to have gotten in at Harvard, my SAT score is the fruit of my labor! and when people run a race, even if the fastest person doesn't "deserve" his speed, the fastest person encourages the person behind him to run faster, and he encourages the person behind him, and then another, and another, in a mutual circle jerk of encouragement! and Michael Jordan worked very hard to get where he is, his life wasn't no picnic!" There's the girl who suggested that rich people wouldn't do any work if they had to pay substantial taxes. some other girl was like, "um, I think that, like, maybe not [mr. i deserve this], but, like, in my case, maybe, like, my family, um, background maybe um helped me to be where I am today, maybe, and, uh, that, like, socio... economics can help, affect, that. yeah." seriously?

Every single UG in the world will have dumbs that sneak through the cracks (AA or clever resume gamesmanship) or gain admission through alternative means. The better the school the smaller percentage of them there will be. Harvard's going to have a stronger overall student body on average than a lower ranked school, but that doesn't mean its class is going to be composed entirely of uber dudes. Also consider that plenty of ppl are going to be science/math heads and oration/poli sci retards. I will agree that the dumbs here tend to be the absolute worst though. They're constantly complimented on their intelligence and are encouraged to be loud and confident. Those are the kind of ppl that do Harvard UG -> Suffolk Law after getting pwned by the LSAT. Date: April 25th, 2012 5:11 AM Author: ultramarine 180 affirmative action base I feel like a 1500+ scorer, which most HUG students will be (right?), should at least get a 165 on the LSAT; I had no idea HUG > Suffolk Law people existed. wouldn't it be phenomenally dumb to go to a tt law school out of HUG? there are so many better things they could do.
and yeah, I'm sure the average HUG student is brighter than that of a lower-ranked school, but I thought the average HUG student was actually really smart. I mean, I went to a top ten college, and while I'm sure the people there were a lot smarter than the average American college student, they generally couldn't write or think at an especially high level. for some reason I thought that at HYP this wasn't the case. |

I think more to the point, even with all 1600 SATs, a certain percentage of people will still say dumbshit or under perform for a variety of reasons. Also, HYP didnt get to be HYP just by taking a bunch of 1600s and calling it a day. Athletics, varied AA class, a certain number of legacy/connected candidates (who tend to be successful and also build endowment networks), etc. are traits without which they would not have been able to achieve the status, academic and cultural, that these schools enjoy.
