I went to Dartmouth and Williams is very similar. There are many ways that you can disparage the two schools, but to say they are full of strivers is incorrect.
I think Amherst is more like Brown than Darmouth or Williams.

1. ugly chicks. deplorably ugly.
2. hanover is fucking tiny and there is nothing there.
3. much more ethnic/jewy than the 'frat' reputation would lead you to believe.
4. actually much more outdoorsy/granola than fratty.
5. people there are pretty content and nice. very low-key and nerdy, light on pretension.
6. if you are a 6'1"+ bro, you will be a fucking giant on campus.
7. EXTREMELY liberal undergrad student body, with many genderqueerasianfaggotmodality studies majors.

Dartmouth troll here.
1. This is overblown. There are plenty of cute preppy girls on athletic teams. They all tended to be in the same couple sororities. Obviously nothing special, but better than other Ivy League schools I visited.
2. This is one of the best parts of the school. It's small with beautiful surroundings. You get to know everyone and the frat culture means your freshman year drinking is completely free. Living in the city sucks.
3. Yeah, plenty of Jews and whatnot, but there's still a sizable number of white dudes from prep schools running the show.
4. There are the hardcore crunchy types, but most people I was friends with swam in the river when it was warm, hiked occasionally, and went skiing a lot in the winter. As a proportion of the student body, not many crunchy hippie types. In fact, the people that ran the freshman camping trips were all just social climbers who liked facetime and didn't know anything about the outdoors.
5. Almost everyone I know who went there loves the place. Nerds can flourish, and nerds who want to act out their high school fantasies can flourish, too.
6. There's a lot of these dudes because the student body is so small and theres a bunch of D1 teams, but yeah, you're mostly right.
7. Liberal for sure. Not nearly as liberal as say Brown or Columbia, but plenty of gender queer studies like any LAC.
Dartmouth fucking rocks. I go back up every chance I can get.

My sibling is grad, visited numerous times. My objective impressions:
1. Girls are pretty atrocious. This is partly because the school is so small + the Ivy filter. Not sure which Ivies are worse, but compared to a normal college, pickings are pretty, pretty, pretty rough.
2. Hanover is a one horse town. Some people love this, but it truly tiny, so it is what it is. No real bar scene or shit to do.
3. Agree on population breakdown. Pretty average for a school like that.
4. It is probably way more granola than other Ivy, certainly more than anywhere else I have been. Not full-on dreadlocks hippy. More like lots of hairy big toes and Tevas everywhere; many dudes who live and die for ultimate frisbee. Despite this, decent weed was strikingly hard to acquire even from the established smoker cliques.
5. Agree that the students largely seemed to love it. Most unhappy people were the hockey bros and WASP clean cut bros who were sort of missing the kind of action they would be party to elsewhere. But they seemed to be a small minority of the student body.
6. See #5.
7. No more libtard than anywhere else. Dartmouth has strong conservative roots as well, but I didn't really get a sense one way or the other.
Overall, sibling thinks it's great and it's a great school if the area/vibe fits you. Can't really see anyone disparaging it for any other reason than location/boredom issues unless they were just so fucking bitter about getting frozen out of the real Ivies.

Williams and Amherst shit all over Dartmouth...
they are the two most prestigious elite LACs (lots of people turn down HYSP for them) - whereas Dartmouth is a third tier ivy
It becomes a tougher question if you don't plan on staying in the northeast
