This is an incredibly generous response to a young woman wanting to go to law school. As to the BigLaw route, I have a step-son who went that direction (UCLA ’06) who’s now doing Foreign Corrupt Practices Act work in Hong Kong for an AmLaw100 firm. He started at Hastings (that’s a U.C.) and made sure he got great grades and a great reputation for excellence (i.e., made the Moot Court team) from his professors. Then he transferred to UCLA to give himself a better pedigree than Hastings provided. He joined the law review staff, worked his butt off and was elected Editor in Chief of the UCLA Law Review (the first transfer student ever to have done so). Then he applied for and got a clerking position with the 9th Circuit, after which he was pretty much gold to AmLaw100 firms. If a law student aspires to this, it is still available. You must, however, anticipate your limitations both in terms of willingness to turn your life over the law school 150% for 3 years and your likely ability to think critically, analyze and write well enough to graduate in the top 20% of your class. I, by the way, made a different set of decisions. I declined “writing onto” the Law Review because I was offered a tutoring job at the law school that paid me money I needed and that I was frankly more interested in doing. I didn’t want to join BigLaw but to be a trial attorney. I got a job for little money for a two-man firm (personal injury) in which my first randomly given bonus was a full third of my yearly salary. I eventually made my way into BigLaw because I knew how to try a case and none of that firm’s associates had any trial experience. You CAN forge your own path but you cannot predict a future in which what you do will make you oodles of money. But in this economy and in this time of revolutionary business change, who can? I continue to say, “follow your bliss.”

EDIT: they also mention the GPA stip as a low number and cleverly forget to mention they curve to like a 2.5. so they'll say scholarship contingent on maintaining a 3.0 (which typical liberal arts major thinks is going to be easy because 80% of the class gets a B) and then do a tight curve at 2.7 so that the top 20% are above 3.0. dumbass liberal arts major only figures this out at the end of the first semester. |
