I know there have been a few threads about LA recently. I have a job offer to move there and it's a pretty sweet one. The job is downtown. I would probably be living in Santa Monica (can't think of a reason to live in LA and *not* live in a beach city).
I am a single early 30s bro from the Northeast but I've lived in a lot of different cities, including NY, LA (for a brief stint 10 years ago), and a couple of places overseas. So I can adjust.
I have a few questions:
1. Is it really all that difficult to party in LA given how you have to drive everywhere?
2. Tell me about the bars in Santa Monica
3. Tell me about what it's like to be single in LA - some people say it sucks, some people say it's a great place to be single. I do want to settle down somewhat soon, so meeting a wifey-appropriate chick is somewhat on my mind. I don't mind dating a chick around my age if it means dating someone more mature that I have shit in common with, who is also ready to settle down.
4. Am I being an idiot by limiting myself to a beach city? I just can't see why people would move to LA and not live near the beach if they have the means.

So SM is not good for singles?
What about somewhere like Manhattan Beach? Someone in the other thread said that the commute would be horrible, but I could just take the 110 downtown and wouldn't have to get to the 405 at all.
Venice, isn't that where art meets crime? I'm not into the hipster thing so Silver Lake is out.
I'm kind of a preppy, yuppie dood myself so I don't mind (and would actually prefer) a more 'yuppie' area.

Commute from MB to DT is something a lot of people do, and you wont have to take the 405.
MB has the very best singles scene if you are a chill alpha bro, non-hipster, non model/actor/actress.
Venice is surfer and rich hipster, has a top notch singles scene but it's hard to break into that circle. Venice is where all the very creative successful people live now.
SM is just TTT. It is nice if you are old and super wealthy and can afford to live in the nice areas. If you are in your 20s or 30s living in an apt it will suck. It is generic, run of the mill. Third Street Promenade, the central area of SM, is like the Vegas strip. The beach is filled with tourists and scumbags and the quality of the water there sucks.
If you are pretty and yuppie, manhattan beach is the only place for you.

Re: Manhattan Beach, I'd be working downtown and would be taking the 110. I haven't done the commute in rush hour traffic, but I don't need to get onto the 405 at all and I'd be spending about 10 miles on the 110 before I get off the freeway.
Also what's the social scene like in MB? What are the chicks like? More singles? More walkability to bars? What about other amenities (grocery stores and such)?
I'm an athletic dood but I'm not a surf dood. Will this hurt me?

MB/Hermosa has a 180 social scene for people in their 20s and early 30s. Most people there arent real surfers so it doesnt matter (but it is something easy to learn if you live there)
the beach there is a million times better than SM which is full of tourists and everyone from Covina and Riverside. MB is basically like it's own little enclave. THe only downside to MB is that it feels a bit removed from the rest of l.a. and is 100% white.
If you are not into the whole hipster scene, or hollywood scene, MB is the place to live. MB is like, frat row from college but grown up.
Tons of walkability to bars (frat type bars). Lots of singles, lots of hooking up, lots of 180 bbqs, lots of partying. Tons of amenities, grocery stores, gyms etc... it is it's own little city. has everything you need.
the only reason not to live there is if you cant deal with the 1 hour commute, you are a hipster, you are an actor and need to get to auditions, you are into all that hollywood shit, or you are a dork and will feel uncomfortable around a ll the chill alphas

I am a white WASPbro originally from New England. I'm athletic, although more with East Coast sports (rowing) than with West Coast sports (water polo). I don't mind and actually prefer the 100% whiteness of a place like Manhattan Beach, and I can only deal with hipsters and hollywood in small doses.
I don't mind the commute. Like I said, I will be commuting in off hours at least twice a week so I'd be beating the worst of the traffic. I can also do some work on the commute (talk on the phone) so it's not that bad.
What are the chicks like in MB? Will it be easy to meet people in MB? I have family and friends in the LA area but with one exception, they're all married with small kids.

money doesnt get you far in terms of dating in l.a.
hipsters dont care - into looks and "creativity"
models/actresses dont care - into looks, alphaness, coolness, date losers.
USC ex sorority alums living in MB - you will need to make at least $100K and have some sort of professional job.

I don't want to be in a family-oriented area. Pacific Palisades is for families, right? I originally was all in favor of the Wilshire Montana area but someone told me about how Manhattan Beach was this fun little beach community filled with USC alumnae and former athletes/fraternity alumnae, which sounded like fun.
I just don't want to be surrounded by tramp stampy white trash. I can concede the fake tits if they're not conspicuously fake.
Also tell me about the best bars in Santa Monica. I'm not interested in meeting cougars but I'd prefer dating a woman between 28 and 35 who has held herself together (I'm 32) and has done shit with her life to a vapid 23 year old sororislut with a tramp stamp or tongue piercing.

I will NOT live east of the 405. Period. End of story.
I do a lot of running and plan on running along the beach every day. I need to be in a neighborhood that's friendly for runners, and the beach is pretty much the best place to do that.
I'd also be able to get into work at noon and leave at 8-9PM a couple of days a week so I'd be able to beat the worst of the traffic.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the weird people were the ones scaring yuppies away. I more meant that the mixture of traffic, crime, immigrants, flakiness, Hollywood culture, and general oddness causes most educated, well-adjusted white people to dislike the city and move away, and the people who remain are usually, yes, a little weird. I'm just speaking from what I've heard numerous times.

if you're looking for a "professional" scene, you're not going to find it in manhattan/hermosa beach. you're going to find a bunch of early-late 20s frat types who works a sales/marketing job making under $100k with rich parents. it is a fairly insular scene where everyone is from socal and went to the same socal schools. also, if you're over 30 and single, you will be a bit too old for the scene.
single finance/law types do not live there. santa monica is a much better scene if you're looking for late 20/early 30s yuppies.
