Brian told Heide to make sure that she did not have to work the weekend of November 18, because they would be taking a trip. Since Brian would not tell her where they were going (and because she is known to be somewhat neurotic or, as she would say, "thorough"), Heide packed for every contingency. They got all the way through security and to the gate to board the plane before Heide realized that she would not be needing those long johns after all -- Brian was whisking her away to the Turks & Caicos Islands!

Later that day when they arrived at their hotel, Brian's meticulously planned itinerary unfolded. Heide and Brian spent an afternoon on the beach and then had dinner at the best restaurant in town. They woke up early the next day for a snorkeling excursion that involved conk fishing and exploring neighboring islands. When they returned from snorkeling, Brian had arranged for a relaxing couples massages at the resort. After the massage, Brian told Heide to get ready for dinner, because he'd made reservations at another great restaurant nearby.

But when Heide emerged from their room and started walking toward the front of the hotel to hail a taxi to the restaurant, Brian pulled her in the other direction. She quickly realized that they were walking toward the beach, and thought that Brian must want to go for a quick stroll before dinner. As the moonlit ocean came into sight, a waiter greeted Heide and Brian and escorted them to a private, candlelit table on the beach. Heide finally figured out that something was up (okay, maybe she had caught on a little sooner). As they were walking back to their room after a delicious meal, Brian got down on one knee and asked Heide to marry him. Heide, of course, said yes.

Originally from North Carolina (go Tar Heels), Heide is of both Persian and American descent. Her mixed heritage led Heide to love international travel from the time she was a little girl. In college Heide studied and volunteered in Nicaragua and Lebanon, and she moved to Jordan the year after she graduated. While living abroad, Heide decided to become a lawyer, and eventually moved to New Haven, CT to attend law school at Yale. Shortly after finishing her studies, Heide met Brian in the lobby of her apartment building (see below). Today, Heide is an attorney at Cleary Gottlieb, an international law firm in NYC.

About Brian

Growing up in Massachusetts, Brian was always curious and active. He played nearly every sport imaginable, took time off from college in his early twenties to explore Southeast Asia (during which time he grew his hair long and wore a beard - ask him for photos), and did a two-year research stint in Philadelphia before attending medical school in Washington, D.C. After finishing med school, Brian began his residency in neurosurgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Just after starting his third year of residency, Brian met Heide in the lobby of her apartment building (see below). Brian is now in the sixth year of his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

How we met

One balmy evening in August 2009, Heide and Brian both found themselves in the lobby of Heide's New Haven apartment building. Brian was in search of a parking pass so that he could leave his car in the garage while he went to dinner with a friend, and Heide was picking up a package of supplies for her upcoming trip to India (she had just taken the New York bar and decided to embark on a six-week celebratory trip). Unfortunately, the doorman was nowhere to be found, so Heide and Brian had no choice but to wait for him to return. After a few minutes of awkward silence, they struck up a lengthy conversation. Heide ended up joining Brian and his friend that evening for dinner, and they decided to keep in touch. That winter, after Heide returned stateside, Heide and Brian went on their first official date, and they have been together nearly every day since ... Today, Heide and Brian live together in Stamford, CT.
