I'm not easy to hurt, boxxy. That's what my younger life was for, and now that it's hopefully over, I just want to tell friends like you that you're in the thick of it now but there could be a day when it's all behind you, too.

This place doesn't help. It makes me sad for you.

This.

Never using condoms

Being too big picture and not giving a fuck about details

Letting good friendships fall away

Choosing rest over self-improvement

Choosing comfort over self-criticism

Gauging success by percentiles

Having no concept of money

Choosing xo over reading

Over-promising and under-performing

Yeah I've got issues with just about everything you listed I just thought those were too mild to be considered self-destructive, but if we're going to allow those then yeah.

Actually, I'm alright on these ones:

"

Choosing comfort over self-criticism

Gauging success by percentiles

i climb things for no real reason without any gear. not just cliffs, but buildings and shit. the thing is, i've never done ANY kind of formal climber safety training. i just go by feel, and do what feels natural. it will probably fail at some point, and everyone will get to laugh at the lawyer who fell from 150 feet with no climbing gear. "oh, what a retard!" they will say. but actually, it's just a function of not caring.

I love to do this shit. I don't climb buildings 150 feet though. I've climbed up telephone poles and talls trees though, and regularly

Yes, you will fail at some point. A couple years ago I skidded about 10 feet down the trunk of a tree and hit my ass on one of the roots, probably fractured my ass bone and couldn't want right for a months or so and hadn't fallen from a tree since I was a kid.

One of the scarier times my climbing got the best of me was when my friend and i were drinking and decided to go off the trail in yosemite, and I was bouldering up the side of an almost sheer rock wall with no gear. At one point, i couldn't find any footholds or cracks to put my hands in and so I just clung there for like 5 minutes, wondering why the fuck I was dumb enough to get myself into that situation, until I found a small ledge jutting out from the edge of the trail and kind of like...hopped up about 6 inches (thankfully the fucking thing held otherwise i might not be posting this) and pulled myself up until I could swing my leg over the dirt.

But yeah, I've had a handful of near misses and some injuries. Something will happen to you at some point, just hope it doesn't kill or paralyze you.

this sounds like it describes me. I mean for all the poasting I've done this week, I'm about to get a draft brief in like two days before it was "due" to the partner, which in turn is like 10 days before we have to get it out the door.

This may be true. I do tend to see the best in people.

However, here's an example.

I took a fiction writing class because I want to test my skills. I'm not a very busy person and had plenty of time to write awesome pieces for workshop, but I always wrote them in half an hour the day they were due (knowing that the point was to put out my best work and see what kind of improvements I needed to make on my best effort).

I could probably be much farther in my career if I took more initiative and stuck out more but I sort of just do enough to get a high five now and again so I can goof off most of the time and browse the web.

maybe you were afraid of what would happen if you actually put in the effort, e.g. that you might "legitimately" fail to write something great -- always easier to believe that you "could" be great but just didn't put in the effort. Leaves the window open for the future.

I really don't ever feel stress. I'm a very low stress person in general and know how to manage my time so things get done, but I almost want to not do a lot of work because I don't have to in order to get paid and continue to be a part of this machine.

sometimes I think the secret to success for people like us is just to set up life so that it makes more demands on us, e.g. take on a harder job so that the "minimum" standard is just higher.

However, knowing the possibility of what even 50% of effort versus 10% of effort could output is what's self-destructive about it. A problem's commonality among many doesn't make it any less of a problem. It seems we all have it, and for what reason?
