If you ever watch college sports or read about conference realignment, you can’t miss the inevitable fawning over the Big 10’s “sterling academic prowess” or some shit like that. Sounds to me like complete flame. Not from that part of the world, but my impression is that NW and Michigan are strong, Wisconsin is alright, Purdue is solid for STEM, Michigan State is TTTT, and everything else is meh at best.

Way off base, Midwesterners?

Not Midwesterner, but the Big 10 land grant schools have been historically some of the best. Even Minnesota or Indiana have some really strong programs, even if they are not prestigious schools.

As overall universities, NU, Mich, Wisc, Illinois are pretty strong. They have a ton of top grad programs.

As a Mich undergraduate, it always pains me to say this, but OSU has gone way up in the last decade. When I was looking at schools 15 years ago, I remember thinking of OSU as some shit, everyone-gets-in school. Then when I graduated and moved on to a T6, all of a sudden, OSU wasn't crap. I'm not sure what happened, but I think the school got a ton of money.

When did they do that? It would have been like 2001 or so, right? If so, this seems like a CR answer.

Also, I know they have like 10 other campuses in SPS cities. If the folks who go to those other schools get aggregated into stats, it makes the school look worse, I think. (Actually, same can be said for most B1G schools. I know at least Purdue and Indiana are the same.) Any tOSU grads on here?

All of them sans Nebraska belong to the AAU.

Which basically means they are all big research schools. Outside of that not sure they care much about academics.

Ideally if they add it would be another SAY school

Though a non research focused but strong academic school like ND would be easily accepted, not that it'll ever happen.

B1G academics as a whole are clearly the best of all the big conferences. Obviously, if you don't like sports and are some aspie nerd, then go Ivy or to some aspie lib arts school like Amherst.

Compare Big 10 to any other big conference. Its the only conference that doesn't have straight up community colleges in it, unlike SEC or Pac 10.

I would say that at the top levels, the ACC dominates the B1G. For the top spot, Duke is at least NW’s equal if not its better. Michigan is a Top 5 public, but so are both UVA and UNC. I would take Ga. Tech over Illinois or Purdue for STEM. B1G has zero answer for the ACC’s small but reasonably prestigious private schools (BC, Wake Forest, and now ND).

Top to bottom, though, possible small advantage B1G. ACC has no less than 3 cowschools (NC State, Va. Tech, Clemson). Miami, Pitt, and Syracuse are meh. FSU has hot girls and good sports but is inarguably a TTT. Louisville is a TTTTT.

Discuss.

One of the Big 10's strengths is that, Nebraska excluded, the "bottom" schools are still relatively strong. Indiana and Minnesota rank towards the bottom end but they have some elite programs

ND isn't really in the ACC until it's a full member, including football.

PSU/Illinois are definitely on par with GT/Wisconsin.

They might have huge student bodies, but a school like Illinois has 8,000 engineering undergrads that all go to a top 5 ranked program. That beats the shit out of BC or WFU that I can't even tell you what good programs they might have.

BC/WF? Get the fuck out of here.

And at the bottom rungs, let's not even get started. NCSU and Louisville? Nigger, please.

I will concede with no argument that NC State is absolute garbage. I've lived in NC. Mentally retarded kids that I knew growing up did well there. Louisville is probably worse. But the top ACC murders the top Big 10. Duke > NW. UVA > Michigan. UNC > anyone but NW and Michigan.

ND is more ACC than it will ever be B1G. Very weak argument that football is required. Certainly, if football is required, the assholes claiming that University of Chicago is B1G (see above) are wrong.

Penn State is a fucking sprawling public TTT in an ugly, cold, grey, shitty piece of shit state with 96,000 students that also harbors child molesters. Wake and BC beat the living shit out of it. I have trouble thinking of a bigger piece of shit academic institution than Penn State.

I will give you that Illinois is solid, especially in STEM.

The bottom of the B1G isn't pretty either. Nebraska and Michigan State are true TTT trashholes. Indiana doesn't exactly bring much heat.

If ND is forced to join any conference all in, they'd be in the Big 10. Big 10 wouldn't let them do that.

Some of the Big 10 schools are well-respected academically, particularly in certain hard science fields.

On the other hand, I know way too many dumb kids who ended up at IU, UW, etc. to have any respect for their undergrad populations. At my high school, these were the types of schools that were targeted by the bottom 1/3 of the class. Michigan was probably the most competitive state school to get into, and I know some pretty sharp kids who went there. Northwestern is an outlier private school - I consider it the Vandy of the Big 10 and not representative of the conference.

Among savvy laypeople, NW and UMich have the most prestige and can be included in the list of acceptable schools for a top high school student. Certain dep'ts like Illinois engineering should also be included in that list. But the rest of the schools for the most part are huge factories with mediocre profs and students.

How was Newton South or Stuyvesant?

And more importantly, how was the University of Michigan?

OOS Michigan kids are rejects from everywhere else. And there's almost no functional difference between a Michigan UG and Wisconsin UG

Went to private HS and Ivy undergrad. Nice try though.

You're way off on Michigan v. Wisconsin. The SAT combined range at Michigan is several hundred points higher than UW. UM isn't the H of the midwest but it's a harder school to get into than UW and has a better all-around reputation.

People don't realize this, but most of Big10 are world class research institutions, and most have at least a couple of top ranked grad programs (as in top 5 or something) Michigan is basically top 10 in just about everything with a rare top 20 here and there. OSU/UofI/UMN are top 20 places in many many grad programs. Wisconsin is somewhere in between with about an even split between top 10/top 20.

I went to tOSU. The honors program seemed pretty good, but I'm pretty sure there were actual retards in some of my non-honors classes
