I think people understand that there are different practice groups. Maybe they don't understand the differences, or what an attorney in any practice does. I'm asked daily "what type of law do you practce." I'm sure my response makes no sense to anyone. My only goal is to make sure they don't think I can help them with their shitty landlord or their mom's shitty bankruptcy, or their friend's shitty child custody hearing.

I think you're wrong here. I had an offer from one of the top plaintiffs firms in the country, and my (nonlawyer) wife and (nonlawyer) family asked me if I really wanted to be an ambulance chaser. I tried to explain that I would be doing plaintiff side antitrust, patent lit, and securities, and they were even less impressed. Like I was going to be some rent-seeker that harassed good business for nuisance value settlements that raised the price on their Cheerios, etc.

A fraction of the time people who say this do legit international law, like working at the ICJ or UN or working for some government department that's involved in treaty negotiations.

The rest of the time it's either imaginary or simply involves dealing with foreign lawyers/having to look up foreign law as an occasional part of your working day.

I'm in the latter category and I would never say I do international law.

For every ICJ prosecutor bringing Serbian war criminals to justice there are 50 people arguing about the drafting of some economic treaty.

"corporate" .... as another poster said

before and during law school, non-law ppl would tell me, "you should go into "corporate" cuz that's where the money is"

now when i do patent law (at a V20, doing patent lit), and tell ppl that, they assume im some small time nerd lawyer who files patents all day

CR. Also, sometimes artist chicks, actresses, and band chicks will want to bang you because they think you might have some hook up. Though, most people in that industry kindof realize everyone else in the industry is full of shit and not nearly important as they claim they are.

It surely is NOT real estate. Even at one of the most prestigious firms in the country, other lawyers in the firm thought we worked for some reduced rate. Kind of pissed me off.

"Corporate" or maybe "antitrust." These are likely the most removed from most non-lawyers' everyday experience, and so are least likely to be related to past shitlaw experience. Don't think that's true of real estate (most have closed on a house), IP (most have infringed on copyrights), tax (most have used turbotax and claimed some questionable small business expenses), litigation (most have gone to court or know someone who has gone to court over some small potatoes insurance claim or DUI), etc.

Speaking from experience, I can assure you, antitrust doesn't really register, much less garner any respect, from a lay person.

Credited. Probably 2% of the population is aware that we have antitrust laws and 0.2% could explain what an antitrust lawyer in private practice does, even in the simplest terms.

International corporate law probably impresses laypeople most. The international part makes it sound glamorous and people understand just enough about corporate to think it's important and lucrative

Lol

Some people have an idea, even a vague one, based on other people's kids, reading the newspaper, etc, etc. In those situations you can at least usually explain something about what you do.

What's truly hilarious is when you meet someone who doesn't really understand that there is a difference between criminal law and anything else.

Had a guy tell me once "dude, you get someone to avoid the death penalty for murder, that's a really big deal". This in response to what I do, which is nothing close to criminal

M&A is the obvious answer.

corporate is clearly NOT the right answer as others have suggested. the notion of a "corporate lawyer" might have a lot of lay prestige, but lay audiences would have no idea what a general corporate practice group at a law firm is. they would think someone who did tax or litigation or regulatory work for large corporations was a "corporate lawyer" just the same as someone in the corporate department at a firm.

sure some lay people might have enough knowledge of terminology to have asked "what group are you in" as opposed to "what kind of lawyer are you" but even those people wouldn't be paying any attention to your answer and would instead be looking at your lips while you talk all the while thinking about how much putting your head on a stick would benefit the world both aesthetically and socially.
