Started reading this board when I was in law school. Haven't been on here for a while - happy to take questions about law school, biglaw life, hiring, etc. Not sure if anyone even uses this board anymore.

How did you endure? I'm fucking sick of it at 2 years.

Also, lit or corp?

I'm in lit. I feel like all litigation is rent seeking. I have yet to see a lawsuit that should actually have been filed.

My first two years were rough - it was hard to find a balance between too much work and too little work. But I'm pretty happy now. I found a niche in a small practice group. And I work for a few partners who are decent human beings, which is pretty rare in biglaw.

how much do grades matter for laterals? i know they always matter to a certain degree, but once the candidate's grades are above the "decent" threshold, do you differentiate based on difference of a few hundreths?

depends on the school. we request transcripts from laterals but I don't think it matters as much as it does for summers. but i don't know too much about lateral hiring because that's a separate hiring committee (i'm on the committee that picks the summers and decides whether to make full-time offers)

1. grades/school (hard cutoff for each school, unless you have an engineering background)

2. whether you are an aspie during your interview (disqualifies about half of the call-backs)

3. soft factors (previous work experience, undergrad background, etc.)

Does your firm request transcripts? If so, if a candidate is above your average callback GPA but had a shit second semester, would the committee take that into consideration?

yes, we request transcripts.

as long as you don't have any C's or LP's, a few bad grades one semester won't hurt you. what matters is your overall transcript.

As long as you're somewhat sociable, you can glide through interviews. We don't ask any substantive questions. Just basic stuff like, "What practices are you interested in?" and "Why did you go to law school?" Just smile, look the interviewers in their eyes, be normal. It's not like consulting interviews, where they want to see how smart you are.

You're right at the borderline for my firm. Not an auto-ding, but if you have something like good pre-law work experience or law review, that could help.

When the summer program is winding down, the committee meets and goes over all of the work reviews. We vote on each summer. In reality, they'll get offers as long as the reviews are generally neutral to positive. One negative review won't sink you, but more than one makes us review the file very carefully, and we often contact the partners/associates for more information.

Describe the reasons you no-offer people. What percentage of people do you no-offer? Describe their reactions to getting no offered.

Also, describe correlations between quality of work as a summer associate and quality of work/longevity of an associate.

Very small percentage - 0-5%. The no-offers are the ones who have consistently bad reviews. They're usually aware that there are problems, so it's never a surprise.

Most summer associates do pretty good work. None of it is really useable, but they bluebook it properly and put in solid effort.

just kind of fell into it in my first year at the firm - they needed an associate.

many of our litigators become AUSAs or go to main Justice or other fed agencies. some clerk (often career clerkships). some teach. some leave law altogether because they are sick of it. our litigators usually leave the fastest because they have the worst hours.

My opinion comes from so many courtroom victories against biglaw "litigators" that I've lost count. They excel at discovery. But when it matters in court, not so much. I'm in government btw. If you're in tax or energy or some other regulatory group, then you are likely at the top of our profession and I tip my hat to you.

Hrs billed, weekends/nights worked per year? Sounds like you have a somewhat stable schedule.

Are you going to wind up in house, and if so what kind of in house do you want?

2,000-2,100/year. I usually have to work for 30 min. to an hour after I get home. I also work a few hours on weekends, but I usually have most of the weekend to myself.

If I go in-house, it will be in my specialized area.

How would you and others react to a potential hire who finished law school in his mid-thirties and had been been working at decidedly non-prestigious jobs like grocery supervisor since college? Assume good grades from a t14 law school.

What about LSAT instructor and say a server and then retail? Had decent UG experience but just decided to enjoy less responsibility in my two years off. Should I be freaking out? XO consensus was that it doesn't matter and it's just grades. Really worried I'm fukkked more than I even think. Probably gone through 3 or 4 jobs in the two years while tutoring the LSAT semi consistently. Restaurant stuff for like 5 months, retail for like a 8 months total, call center for like 5 months, then idk shit for the rest.

Given the divine intervention, would you hire Petrus Lateral Us Romanus regardless of a shitstorm that's been swept under the rug?

http://i.imgur.com/JDwRo2r.jpg

The Gospel Of Philip - "One single name is not uttered in the world, the name which the Father gave to the Son; it is the name above all things: the name of the Father. For the Son would not become Father unless he wore the name of the Father. Those who have this name know it, but they do not speak it. But those who do not have it do not know it."

The name the Father gave to the Son is "Petrus Lateral Us Romanus."

http://i.imgur.com/L1XBByq.jpg

Lateralus is inspired by the work of Carl Jung. The Stone in The Grudge is a philosopher's stone.

Most scholars consider the document a 16th-century elaborate hoax.[5] Like any good conspiracy theory, there are many holes in the lore of St. Malachy, according to Father James Weiss, a professor of church history at Boston College. "It is widely thought ... given who the author was and his relationship, [that the prophecies] were published to establish the case for election of one particular cardinal," said Weiss.[6] Dr. Thomas Groome, chair of the Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College, has a similar notion, "For myself -- and even as a native Irishman -- the 'Prophecies of St. Malachy' are a grand old fun tale that have about as much reliability as the morning horoscope".[6] Thomas J. Reese, SJ, of Georgetown University, had only this to say: "St. Malachy's prophecy is nonsense."[6]

It's still a respectable hoax. The philosopher's stones isn't a hoax, even if Peter The Roman is.

Would you hire someone with six months work experience in a Vault 100 firm who then produced a philosopher's stone? Would you consider a philosopher's stone to be a meritorious continuation of education in Philosophy & Religion?

Some make more, some make less. The litigators tend to make less, particularly because they usually go to the federal government. You can make in the high-100s if you go to some of the independent agencies that aren't on the GS scale (like SEC). Regulatory/corporate associates can make more by going in-house, depending on their areas of expertise.

You'll work your ass off at any of those firms. Don't listen to the recruiter/partner talk about "work-life balance." All biglaw firms are the same. It really depends on the practice group you end up in and the partners you end up working for.

Of that list, Gibson's DC office is the best in terms of work quality and exit options.

I'm not on the lateral hiring committee, so I can only speak to what I have seen. People who have had good government experience (e.g., DOJ Civil Fraud) often have a leg up on a random Skadden doc review supervisor. But the best way to get a lateral position is to have an engineering degree and patent litigation experience.

Yeah that's not me. I've basically become really good at writing briefs (including being the guy on a trial team who cranks out briefs) and working with experts (helping get their reports together and prepping them for depos/trial with not a lot of supervision). Been able to avoid a lot of doc review. Not sure if that makes me useful or if I'm generally interchangeable with everyone else at my level.
