after this, no city is really intellectual. LA isn't bad. Not sure why u picked Durham and Champaign; there are better college towns than those--New Haven, Princeton, Stanford (Palo Alto/Menlo), Berkeley, Ann Arbor, Charlottesville, even Austin or Boulder

Parts of it are, but there's actually some fairly nice areas there in the city proper (and the suburbs near the university). Great architecture in the city and there's a nice arts district that has been completely revitalized in the last ten years. Can score an impressive victorian in the area for $200-300k.

But yes, there's big segments of the population that are ignorant Buffalo Bills loving proles.
sorry for the Buffalo trolling. lived there as a kid and still have fond memories of the place.

Same here, brother. Still, when I go back to visit, it's fun for a few days and then I need to GTFO. I really, really can't imagine living there after seeing other places. If someone's life is Buffalo, Rochester, Pittsburgh, etc., then it might not seem so bad, but once you see SF, LA, DC, NY or even Boston or, hell, Cleveland, it's no comparison.
Also, those Victorians that are now $200-300K were ~$100K 10-15 years ago. EV has really gentrified. The housing isn't as cheap as I remember it being when I was a kid.
EDIT: Also, your neighbors are almost definitely to be 90% proles, unless you spend $750K in Clarence. And then you live in Clarence and are spending as much as you would be most other places.

I agree that if you're still in your '20s and living in a truly cosmopolitan city, then the idea of living in Buffalo is downright depressing. I remember when I was living on my own for the first time in Los Angeles, and I just felt so grateful that I had escaped a place like Buffalo. Now, after 15+ years living between LA/SF/DC/OC, and married with kids, I can see the appeal of simplifying life in a place like Buffalo and giving my kids a normal laidback childhood.
Also, it's not just Clarence. Clarence, Williamsville and Amherst are all nice towns with a highly educated populace, where you can find/build reasonably priced homes. My parents recently downsized by building a new home in Amherst for just short of $300k. Their neighbors are all professionals.
Still, I'll never move back, barring divorce. Wife's a California girl and can't stand more than a week in Buffalo.

There's some truth to wanting to give kids a normal childhood. I don't envy them in most CA public schools -- they seem to be either total shit, obscenely rich, or superstudy. And I really liked my parents' backyard and the neighborhood feel of the place. It's almost impossible to find that near SF/LA, short of having partner dollars.
Last two sentences: Ohai, me. Although there's some comfort in the wife's "no way," because then I don't have to waste too much time thinking about it when biglaw becomes particularly depressing.
(That said, we actually looked into moving back at one point a few years ago, but we couldn't find two professional jobs there that fit despite using every family resource I had to try to make it work. Sad, but again, now I don't have to waste much time thinking about how great it might be.)

There are no intellectual cities on america. You only have pockets of intellectuals scattered through-out the nation. Most americans are retarded.
Cupertino/Silicon Valley probably has the highest proportion of intellectuals though.

And LJL @ you using "general interest periodicals" as a metric for intellectualism. Can we debate Newsweek vs. Time next? Oh, what scholarship!

D.C. has an intellectual culture of its own. It's not just in Washington, but impacts the surrounding metro. Boston has Harvard and MIT. That's it. Sure, that's something, but it's not enough to put Boston ahead of New York/D.C./Chicago/San Francisco.
General interest periodicals are one metric for intellectual life. Any university can crank out specialized scholarship that's irrelevant to the rest of the community. That's a pretty sterile form of intellectual life and not very interesting.
Time and Newsweek may be third-tier publications, but even they wouldn't headquarter in Boston.

I have no great love for Boston, but it's just so absurd and random to decide that where general interest publications are headquartered is such a fantastic metric for measuring the "intellectual" quality of a city. Quality and number of bookstores makes just as much sense. And one metric crowns DC while the other crowns Boston. That's not scholarship.
"But DC museums >>>> Boston museums! DC is just so full of prancing scholars thirsting for the nectar of knowledge!"

I live here. Minneapolis is very much a put your nose to the grindstone, don't care if you have a degree; I only care about your work product town.
It's a great place to live and work, but to call it intellectual seems kind of off to me.
They'd rather hunt and fish than read a fucking book or talk politics or some kind of intellectual endeavor.
It's very industrious and prosperous based on heritage, but I wouldn't call it intellectual by any stretch.
Thoughtful, introspective and and industrious. Intellectual...just LOL.

We really need to split this into 2 categories: major metro and everything else
Major metro:
NYC
Boston
SF
Seattle
Portland
DC
Everything else:
Austin
Madison
Ann Arbor
Boulder
"Research Triangle" (not sure how to split that up)
LOFUCKINGL at some of these lists. Sorry bros, Chicago is *not* intellectual. It's a big fucking city, but it's not an intellectual city. Minneapolis has pockets of that intellectual vibe, but it's a Midwest town that draws in people from 500 miles all around. People coming from Rapid City, SD to Minneapolis and rural Iowa to Minneapolis do not make it an intellectual place. The best school in Minnesota, Carleton, is not in Minneapolis, and the University of Minnesota is one of the weakest Big 10 schools.
