By salary I meant compensation. What is this like 200k+? And 500k+ for the special cases who retire with 150k-200k per year pension for 40 years?

Are we all fucking retarded for not being cops or what?

I know this was sarcastic, but serious question: Why do they have pensions instead of just paying out the present value as a salary?

To me the answer is:

1. Taxpayers OVERWHELMINGLY would never ever approve of what they are making if they understood it, and a pure salary would be too easy to understand.

2. They can't afford to pay themselves that much in real time, so they irresponsibly saddled the next generation with the obligation.

all executive comp is basically designed to be so complex and to defer realization for long enough that no one can get upset about it.

CEO's get made like an even $1m in salary but then make $10m in stock appreciation units and supplemental retirement plans

LOL, this isn't true at all.

1. Executive comp is deferred for two reasons: taxes, and in order to make it contingent on performance over time.

2. Executive comp is constantly scrutinized and broken down into totals.

3. Directors and the vast majority of stockholders by volume are more than sophisticated enough to understand executive compensation. (Unlike the average voter/taxpayer).

Retard, find me a multimillion dollar agreement that does not include many pages but that is heavily regulated and fraught with complex legal issues. But yes the mechanics of the actual scheme can also be complex.

I'm not going to argue that executive compensation is justified or right, but the relevant people understand what execs are getting paid.

His benefits are the best of the best as well. This is rightly considered as part of compensation. Its especially important for people with families, where routine medical bills could easily cost 1000s.

It's the biggest advantage. If we could take $100K of our biglaw salaries and put $100K in a 401K, we'd be doing pretty well. Assuming you are somewhat competent in investing your own money, which many people are not.

No. You'd be doing as well as cops IF:

1. You worked an average of 20-25 hours a week for the year.

2. You did a job that could easily be COMPETENTLY filled at 40-50k per year.

3. Your total compensation was like 300k per year each year that you actually worked, and the people paying your salary didn't even know/care and if they did would have a very hard time doing anything about it.

4. You did not have to spend any time (opportunity cost) or money going to law school or even college really.

5. Little to zero chance of being LAYOFF PWNED (compared to 100% chance in biglaw).

6. For the second half of your working life you get to have another chill career doing whatever you want, starting a business etc, and any money you make is on top of your pension.

What's the average total compensation for a cop? Is this just in certain cities or is this a national phenomenon? Regardless, I can't be too upset that other people are beating the system. I made the ill-advised choice of going to law school and have to deal with it.

There are extreme cases of 200k+ pensions that are limited to certain places but even these are by no means a rare thing. They are all over NJ, NY, CA, and IL.

But even the norm is to work for 25 years and retire around 45 and then collect a pension, maybe 80-100k or something, for 40 fucking years or even much more as life expectancy goes up. And as medical costs go up, so does your total compensation all throughout retirement.

I'm not angry at your average cop, and I don't get upset or jealous at people making money. But these are public employees. That means taxpayers and voters are supposed to be deciding what kind of service they want from these institutions and what compensation should be. So this is exactly the kind of thing that we should be deliberating on.
