there are hundreds of rap records every year that are more stark and less melodic than this. the record has deep chicago house and drill influences. it's not that out of left field or progressive, it's just not very calibrated for mainstream radio play. the songs are actually pretty soft and bitchmade compared to a lot of shit that is out there that you're not familiar with. people thought the first wu-tang album was almost unlistenable because it was so gritty and raw when it came out. now those songs sound like melodic and nostalgic classic hits. this is how music get pushed forward and becomes more dynamic. it's not a perfect album but it's pretty bold and creative, and he has balls to throw it out there with no clear singles and a sound that bucks against radio. |
