cops and juries and judges and laws are racist etc.
Some time later I was watching TV with my dad, and some show came on with prison inmates. I said, "Hey dad, did you know why there are so many black people in jail? It's because the policemen go after black people more because they are black." (or something like that)
He asked me where I heard that, then said, "Actually that's not right, son. More black people are in jail because black people commit more crimes."
I remember this like it was yesterday. I was like, wow, and thought about that for a while. I even remember the show sort of, there were some people escaping from prison or something.

According to a report on race and drug enforcement published by Human Rights Watch in May 2008, while African Americans comprise 13% of the US population and 14% of monthly drug users they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses. This stat came up during the 2009 Congressional testimony by Marc Mauer of The Sentencing Project. Mr. Mauer went on to point out that African Americans, who are 13% of the population and 14% of drug users, are not only 37% of the people arrested for drugs but 56% of the people in state prisons for drug offenses.
"Over the last fifteen years, police departments in the United States made 10 million arrests for marijuana possession—an average of almost 700,000 arrests a year. Police arrest blacks for marijuana possession at higher rates than whites in every state and nearly every city and county—as FBI Uniform Crime Reports and state databases indisputably show. States with the largest racial disparities arrest blacks at six times the rate of whites. This list includes Alabama, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and Wisconsin."
The police stop blacks and Latinos at rates that are much higher than whites. In New York City, where people of color make up about half of the population, 80% of the NYPD stops were of blacks and Latinos. When whites were stopped, only 8% were frisked. When blacks and Latinos are stopped 85% were frisked according to information provided by the NYPD. The same is true most other places as well. In a California study, the ACLU found blacks are three times more likely to be stopped than whites.
"Police in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York have arrested blacks for marijuana possession at more than seven times the rate of whites. Since 1997, New York City alone has arrested and jailed more than 600,000 people for possessing marijuana; about 87 percent of the arrests are of blacks and Latinos."
This problem is only compounded in states like Georgia, which has a “two strikes, you’re out” law, under which a life sentence may be imposed for a second drug offense. As of 1995, life imprisonment under the “two strikes” law had been imposed on 16% of eligible black defendants, while the same sentence had been imposed on only 1% of eligible white defendants. Consequently, 98.4% of those serving life sentences under Georgia’s “two strikes, you’re out” law are black.
Among persons over age 24, Blacks (11.2%) were significantly more likely to be pulled over while driving than Whites (8.9%). BJS. March 2002. “Characteristics of Drivers Stopped by Police, 1999.” See < http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cdsp99.pdf Viewed July 3, 2003> (July 3, 2003).
Among drivers stopped for speeding, Blacks (75.7%) and Hispanics (79.4%) were more likely than Whites (66.6%) to be ticketed. Id.
Police were more likely to conduct a search of the vehicle and/or driver in traffic stops involving Black male drivers (15.9%) or Hispanic male drivers (14.2%), compared to White male drivers (7.9%). Id.
Blacks (5.2%) and Hispanics (4.2%) stopped by police while driving are more likely than Whites (2.6%) to be arrested. BJS. February 2001. “Contacts Between Police and the Public, 1999 .” See <http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cpp99.pdf > (June 16, 2004).
In 1992, as part of a report by the ABC news program "20/20,” two cars, one filled with young black men, the other with young white men, navigated the same route, in the same car, at the same speed through Los Angeles streets on successive nights. The car filled with young black men was stopped by the police several times; the white group was not stopped once, despite observing police cars in their immediate area at least 16 times during the evening.
In Volusia County, Florida, in 1992, nearly 70% of those stopped on a particular Interstate highway in central Florida were black or Hispanic, although only 5% of the drivers on that highway were black or Hispanic. Moreover, minorities were detained for longer periods of time per stop than whites, and were 80% of those whose cars were searched after being stopped.
78% of Black youth arrested in Oakland never charged with a crime.
Once arrested, blacks are more likely to remain in prison awaiting trial than whites. For example, the New York state division of criminal justice did a 1995 review of disparities in processing felony arrests and found that in some parts of New York blacks are 33% more likely to be detained awaiting felony trials than whites facing felony trials.
African Americans are frequently illegally excluded from criminal jury service according to a June 2010 study released by the Equal Justice Initiative. For example in Houston County, Alabama, 8 out of 10 African Americans qualified for jury service have been struck by prosecutors from serving on death penalty cases.
One of the most thorough death penalty studies, conducted by Professors David Baldus, Charles Pulaski, and George Woodworth, found that defendants charged in Georgia with killing white victims were 4.3 times more likely to receive the death penalty than defendants charged with killing black victims. David C. Baldus, Charles Pulaski, and George Woodworth, “Comparative Review of Death Sentences: An Empirical Study of the Georgia Experience,” 74 Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology 661-753 (1983) (“Baldus Study”).
One of the most thorough studies of sentencing disparities occurred in the New York courts between 1990 and 1992. State researchers concluded that one-third of minorities sentenced to prison would have received a shorter or nonincarcerative sentence if they had been treated like similarly situated white defendants.
According to that study, if probation-eligible blacks had been treated like their white counterparts, more than 8,000 fewer black defendants would have received prison sentences in that period, resulting in a 5% decline in the percentage of blacks sentenced to prison.
The U.S. Sentencing Commission reported in March 2010 that in the federal system black offenders receive sentences that are 10% longer than white offenders for the same crimes. Marc Mauer of the Sentencing Project reports African Americans are 21% more likely to receive mandatory minimum sentences than white defendants and 20% more like to be sentenced to prison than white drug defendants.
During 1989-1990, a white felony defendant with no criminal record stood a 33% chance of having the charge reduced to a misdemeanor or infraction, compared to 25% for a similarly situated black or Hispanic. Between 1981 and 1990, 50% of all whites who were arrested for burglary and had one prior offense had at least one other count dismissed, as compared to only 33% of similarly situated blacks and Hispanics. Blacks charged with a single offense received sentencing enhancements in 19% of the cases, whereas similarly situated whites received such enhancements in only 15% of the cases. Christopher Schmitt, “Plea Bargaining Favors Whites, as Blacks, Hispanics Pay Price,” The San Jose Mercury News, Dec. 8, 1991, at 1A (“Mercury News Report”).
"A significant new study finding racial bias in Harris County’s death penalty system was released today [in 1997] stating that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office was over three times more likely to seek the death penalty against African American defendants ... than against similarly-situated white defendants. The research also shows that Harris County juries were more than twice as likely to impose death sentences on African American defendants ... than on similarly situated white defendants."
A similar study was done by UNC Chapel Hill and found that blacks were 3.5x more likely than whites to get the death penalty for a given crime in NC.
"Black defendants facing trial in Houston – the death penalty capital of America – are more than three times as likely to face a possible death sentence than whites, new academic research [by a criminologist at U of MD] has revealed."
Also, the disparity between sentencing for crimes involving powder cocaine vs. crack cocaine (which until recently was literally a 100:1 difference in punishment for a given mass of cocaine) disproportionately hurt blacks. Seems pretty racist to me.
BONUS FACT: Even when released from prison, race continues to dominate. A study by Professor Devah Pager of the University of Wisconsin found that 17% of white job applicants with criminal records received call backs from employers while only 5% of black job applicants with criminal records received call backs. Race is so prominent in that study that whites with criminal records actually received better treatment than blacks without criminal records!
IN CONCLUSION: O what a fair system!

it doesn't specify which drugs are being used
and
i call bullshit. more blacks per capita use illegal drugs than whites. it is certainly correlated and perhaps caused by the same factors that have more blacks committing more crimes than whites.
motherfuck, the stereotypes are not formed out of whole cloth

I'll tell you what I told the other guy:
"JFC, read the second paragraph. If you look at marijuana arrests alone, blacks get arrested much more than whites even though they use the drug at the same rates.
I guess I didn't explicitly mention that marijuana usage rates are roughly the same across races, but I figure that should be common knowledge at this point. For the uninitiated: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/04/us/marijuana-arrests-four-times-as-likely-for-blacks.html"
I know it sucks having your stereotypes challenged, but the fact of the matter is this one has been empirically shown to be unfounded.

i want stereotypes challenged.
i want blacks to fix their problems as a group.
no fucking way blacks use weed or any illegal drugs less often than whites per capita. there is just too large of a % of whites that are stiff, law-abiding, and boring for lack of better terms.
edit: i suppose whitey might win the meth race.
