Date: December 1st, 2013 3:58 AM Author: Hyperventilating office Many clinicians are unaware of the presence of a completely opposite model of depression, "depressive realism" (DR).[67] This model grew out of research with normal subjects, who were given certain tests of cognitive functioning (contingency judgment of control over a green light when pushing a button), in which sometimes their errors were due to their own decisions and other times errors were introduced randomly outside the subjects' control. Subjects were asked to describe to what extent they felt they were causing the errors produced. Those who had some depressive symptoms based on self-report rating scales were more accurate than those without depressive symptoms in correctly attributing error to themselves as opposed to random error beyond their control. Conversely, the "normal" nondepressed subjects had a sense of greater control than they really possessed. Hence, researchers suggested that these mildly, but not necessarily clinically, depressed subjects were more realistic than their completely nondepressed counterparts.
The DR model has an important implication. One might conclude that normal nondepressed persons have some lacunae of insight, some psychological blind spots, which are necessary for normal emotional functioning. |
