One prominent American who has questioned the future of ICBMs is Chuck Hagel, the current secretary of defense. As a private citizen in 2012 he endorsed a report that outlined a phased elimination of nuclear weapons, to include scrapping U.S. ICBMs within 10 years. The report by a group called Global Zero said the ICBM "has lost its central utility" in nuclear deterrence.

Tcr. Even if we could somehow ensure our enemies completely eliminated their nuclear weapons, do we really want to go back to a pre-MAD world? a ground war in asia is just what we need

The minuteman fleet is tested regularly. A nuclear deterrent that is based around planes traveling great distances in order to deliver their payloads is of much less value than fast, reliable and basically unstoppable missiles.

Subs can deliver their payloads pretty quickly as well. I think the consensus is that large nation-states capable of launching a nuclear attack will not do so given the increasingly tangled web of economic interests between all nations. A large and expensive nuclear deterrent is unnecessary.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Why do we need to waste money on those things? Most of them have already been decommissioned.

We already have a foolproof second-strike ability with our Ohio sub ICBMs (not to mention the airforce).

Anyway, the point of a nuclear triad is that each leg of the nuclear triad is vulnerable to a different thing. You have to basically believe that our SSBNs are infallible/unsinkable to believe that they, alone, are a sufficient deterrent.

lol, as if we will believe anything out of your lying Yankee mouths. Under treaty your Trident MIRV's are supposed to be capable of only 8 warhead release rotations, but when the British sent up a Trident a few years back Russia's new radars clocked it performing a full 10 release rotations. Dumb limeys underestimated resolution of Russian radars. You lied in your START declarations then and you lie now. We don't believe a thing out of your politicians mouths. Only thing Russian can trust is its RVSN.

We know fully that you Yankees plan to nullify Soviet second strike potential with your GBI and land based SM-3 deployments. We will not sit back and let our nuclear parity erode. To ensure continued Soviet nuclear preeminence Vladimir Vladimirovich has funded the development and deployment of a wide variety of new missiles including the return of Soviet rail mobile ICBM's, the development of a new super-heavy ICBM with a 100 ton throw weight to replace the venerable SS-18 Satan, the return of Soviet MRBM's in the form of the brand new RS-26, a new version of the Topol with a hypersonic BUS, and a continued move away from single warhead Topol-M's to multi-warheard RS-24 Yars missiles for the obliteration of your population centers. And we have initiated a new program to rebuild and harden our silos against the current generation of puny Yankee warheads. The current silos being built can withstand even a direct strike from your pathetic W76 100kt warheads. And we will match your SM-3 deployments with S-500 deployments.

Eliminating them completely seems a bit much, we could reduce our inventory by at least 50% without suffering anything strategically.
