In order to support this, the author has to agree with the over-arching principle that we should be supplementing our water with anything that is shown to be helpful, on the whole, to humans.
Obviously there are major problems with this. I doubt the author would agree with us grinding up multi-vitamins or protein powder or spinach and putting it in the water supply.
How about you just disseminate the supposed beneficial effects and let individuals decide?

this doesn't follow. supplementing water with lithium would have no real effects on its taste or smell (the same as fluoride). supplementing with the other things you mentioned would be quite different in that sense. not to mention most of the evidence suggests that multi-vitamin supplements are harmful in the general population.
i am not generally in favor of paternalistic government policy, but water fluoridation has been an enormous public health success with virtually no downsides. the people who don't want it are the same retards who are afraid of vaccines.
