I always thought they were generally considered #2 after the great white in the shark hierarchy. Why would I think this?

Raptors in Jurassic Park were made up bullshit. Actual velociraptors were the size of a turkey and not particularly fearsome.

Your dinosaur pantheon is right on the money. Second tier would have to include iguanodon, pteranodon, dimetrodon, and the various duckbill bros.

The oceanic whitetip was shamefully underemphasized as part of my childhood shark education at the Academy; it was only as an adult, once I was brought into the Service and granted access to the file records, that I realized just how great a role they've played in the ongoing campaign of waged war against the human race. "Great White" "Bull" "Tiger" "Indominus" "Hammerhead" "Mako"--these were the standard bearers of the enemy, meant to deflect our attention while the real assassins went about their covert work, picking us off in our wrecks and crashes, our falls by topsy-turvy wobble dip off Carnival balconies and our midnight starlit dashing fancy swims along the Somali coast, diving in from the bow of the tanker TI Xerxes while the watch changes and the cargo is re-centered -- a quick sea frolic by the Second Engineering Department, oil band of brothers them, never to reemerge, the twinkling sky canopying the Arabian Sea sole witness to the quiet carnage of these killers

I seen a mako skeleton at a museum in 2nd grade and it was fuckin HUGE so I trolled pretty hard for makos back then. truly the Chicago RIGOR shark.

I put bull sharks right up there man but they just never got the hype of the others. Columbia. Great placement, lots of reasons you'd pick it, but no match for the RIGOR of the mako or the prestige of the great white, hammerhead, and tiger

The orca leaned back in the folding chair, his great weight straining the flimsy metal thing; it creaked loudly, its collapse seeming imminent but somehow it held. He observed the discussion in the town hall without comment, arms crossed, pipe hanging from his lip, color-contrast head encircled with white wisps of smoke. He exuded the quiet cool confidence of one who could take all comers. What he didn't know: a physeter macrocephalus, recently returned from the frontier, grown strong and wise from waged battleyears, was soon to enter.

I agree....used to be that hammerhead were really the NUMBER ONE shark...long time ago...before the jaws movie...hammerhead were the badasses...see for example the boys adventure book CALL IT COURAGE..the hammerhead was the real deal...

but it was eclipsed by the great white...

just like nowadays the pit bull is the badass of dogs, but back in the 60s, it was the german shepherd, then in the 70s, the doberman, then the rottweiler in the 80s...

times change, man...sad but true...
