The first one is pretty chill, lots of trees. The second one sucks tiny floppy wizard dick except for the sweet ones overlooking the coast. The rest all have basically no yard at all, and the house is just conspicuous consumer bullshit.

You spend all your time in boxes: car to work, cubicle, car from work, house. No yard, failure to experience what it measn to be human, failure to commune with all the aspects of our ancestors' lives that got us where we are today.

Yeah, living in a safe neighborhood where your kids can ride their bikes around and maybe even go to swim lessons at the pool is boring compared to having to run to your car parked on the street before tyrone and his boys notice your new diaper bag that would fetch a good $10 at the local pawn shop.

(Person who has never lived in a city)

Listen, some people want big houses so they can sit in their backyards and play with their dog.

Other people don't care about a big house and just want to live in a major icy because they prioritize having a vibrant social life and being near cultural amenities. Why can't you just accept that your preferences are yours and that other people's are valid also instead of trying to prove that people who have different preferences than you are "wrong" somehow? XO posters just look stupid with the "b-b-but the OPERA" crap because that's really missing the point of living in a world city.

suburbia is a inhuman subhuman racist bullshit way to live. humans have been living in real communitieis for thousands of years and suburbs will never stand the test of time, they are just the typical way of americans being self centered racist shits who want to fuck over others, it shows in the character of most americans, who are unable to communicate like normal human beings or behave like normal beings cause they grow up secluded from humankind in their shit suburbs

Bro if you're going to get all naturalistic, humans should be in small tribes with a lot of outdoor space aka suburbs with families, not packed into shoebox apartments with cats.

Yeah plus people in cities keep to themselves or avoid conversation even if you're in the same building. People think you're a weird guy or after something for chatting with them in the city. In the burbs it's totally normal to chat with your neighbors, borrow tools, invite the family next door to your BBQ.

lol, cities anywhere that have a teeming underclass are generally unlivable for all but the wealthiest who can segregate themselves from the hoi polloi.

it's been this way since the dawn of civilization. there's a reason people have, over history, fled the population-dense cities out into the hinterlands.

for most of history the underclasses were kept down with extreme force. they were executed for minor offenses, lynched by mobs, sold into slavery/servitude, conscripted into the military, or imprisoned.

look at NY and how stop&frisk puts thousands of impoverished "youths" in jail for trivial shit. yet it's also the most livable large city.

I'm saying you're 100% correct but adding the last sentence makes it sound as if you're trying to justify your position to liberals, who couldn't care less what's reasonable or unreasonable, right or right, natural or unnatural, because their sole purpose is self-destruction.

It's like trying to reason with an alcoholic. The sober person thinks he's dealing with a rational actor so he explains the consequences of drinking, the bleak future outlook etc. Meanwhile the alcoholic, who hates himself and wants to die, is figuring out where his next drink is coming from.

Most american suburbs have ugly architecture, shitty construction, no downtowns, long meandering streets that take forever to exit and that always feed onto crowded main roads etc. Many of the suburbs in major cities are nice, but those constitute a small minority of american suburban/exurban living.

My point is that if you're poor and have kids then suburban living makes much more sense. They couldn't afford good quality city life, so a mediocre suburban life seems like the only good option. The option of good city living vs. suburban living only opens up at the higher SES spectrum.

Certainly don't deny that. The other thing to note is that many that choose city life also have a second home or commonly rent places in vacation destinations like the Hamptons or ski destinations.

Yes, but I think you and I have both discussed and agree that that's almost a necessary thing for anyone living a dense urban environment who has the means to do so. I like Manhattan, but being there 24/7/365 is maddening.

Agree. My one note is that I wonder if renting is better than owning here. I spend some much time dealing with one house that the thought of a second one is a horrifying thought, and I don't even have kids.

Not a lib, but suburban living is generally absolutely awful. Need to drive everywhere, housing is huge but low quality, the people suck, restaurants/stores are usually low quality chains. I lived for years in one, came back many years later and didn't know anyone there because no one ever talks to anyone else. They just sit inside and watch TV. The picture in the OP is a great example of this.

And yes, people can say that some wealthy suburbs with nice walkable city centers close to excellent housing and excellent regional trains to major city centers but those are a small minority of suburbs. Most are just soulless places where it is cheap to raise kids full of soulless people watching local sports and drinking beer like the dumbs they are.

I don't disagree with your analysis entirely, but this tends to be a class/economic distinction, rather than an urban/suburban distinction.

As you note in your post, when you look at suburbs where the people have some money, and are educated, there are MUCH better offerings, and, in fact, I think those are some of the strongest communities.

There's definitely correlation but even among wealthy locations you have a lot of crap suburbs. A bunch consist of McMansion filled suburban hellholes where the houses are huge and cost like $1m+ but it still has the problems of other suburbs: nothing to do, nothing is walkable, commutes are long, etc. Great, so now the house is bigger, has more land and now has a pool. The TV is bigger and the beer is pricier. But same basic equation.

I think a lot of what XO loves with respect to small towns is actually represented by wealthy vacation locations. Stuff like Aspen, sections of the Hamptons, and so on. Everyone is wealthy, walkable towns with tons of restaurants and shops, plenty of entertainment options and no crime. But that has pretty much no relation to typical suburban living.

I live in the exurbs, have an hour commute on the train. But, I also have a 3400 sq ft house with a fucking catwalk overlooking the two story living room. I also have an inground pool and a walkout basement. My neighbors are all white, yuppie, and we discuss our portfolios over bbq on the weekends while our kids play nicely together. This is better than a 5th floor walkup and dragging two kids and their equipment on the fucking E train.

I agree with this. The other thing is that I'm really glad not everyone makes the same choices. If suburbanites lived in the cities you would have people calling the cops 24/7 because "omg, it is LOUD" or "omg, I saw a girl that I think is a PROSTITUTE, I have CHILDREN what if they see?!?!" Also city living would be even more expensive.

Yeah the xo posters who post about being scared of minorities and just wanting to sit in their backyard by themselves and drink gin and tonics obviously shouldn't move to NYC. And NYC residents who find homogeneity boring and are very into cultural things shouldn't move to the suburbs.

There's something for everyone. XO posters just look insecure and promise when they try to denigrate everyone who makes different choices than they do.

For I, and most, it all comes down to kids. Being single or married no children - then absolutely urban life is the best. Once kids enter the picture the suburbs are just too practical. Then, the kids grow up and they move into the city. Then they get married and then they move to the suburbs. Rinse repeat, rinse repeat. So is life.

Yeah, objectively life with kids becomes much more expensive in cities. Space is at a premium, you really need private schools unless your kids get into a top magnet, etc. OTOH, there's public transportation, so you don't have to drive kids everywhere. Also, it is nice that your kids don't grow up nearly as sheltered in a big city.

Yes, its tough because you wind up really working for the weekend. Between commute and office time there isnt much day left by the time I get home. But, this more of a mfh problem. I imagine its pretty credited to have the same house as I do but say like a 15 minute drive from downtown denver, austin, charlotte, or wherever it is that people live nowadays. But raising kids in mfh, no way, not even with millions.

I would modify that to "big city" problem. SF/SV, LA, DC, Chicago, etc. all have horrid commutes to the burbs.

Also, I would say that raising kids in MFH can be 180 if you're rich. Imagine a rowhouse or a multi-floor penthouse unit near Central Park, top private schools and on weekends you live at your second house in the Hamptons. Take a nice ski/dive vacation or trip to Europe/Asia/African safari every year. Easy access to hired help to clean, babysit, etc.

For people that aren't filthy rich, I think near urban suburbs (Brooklyn, Hoboken, Jersey City, Riverdale, etc.) are all solid options that balance commute/amenities and cost.

I grew up smack in the middle of downtown of a huge city. I could not fathom living in a suburb at any point in my life. I see the hordes of suburbanites marching in pack fashion to the commuter rail at 5:30pm to escape the city and I thank the heavens that isnt me.

The city has nothing to do with "culture" or "opera" or whatever else people say. It has to do with energy. Those suburbs are dead places. I spend a fair bit of time in the nicest suburbs of the city I live in because many of my friends now live there after doing their 8 year city stint. It's mind numbingly boring and not a one of them is able to come home from work and not immediately start drinking.

I always ask them why they left the city and they always say "for the schools". This is code for "for the homogeneity".

So, would you say the city has made you overstimulated? I find that to be a problem with a lot of people who grow up in a major city. The city is great, but it's weird as fuck to feel the need to be stimulated 24/7.

I have also spent time in many of the nicest suburbs of NYC, and you can EASILY find things to do any night of the week, though not with the breadth and number of things to do in NYC of course. If you can't, then you're the boring one.

City has way better food and nightlife options. Nice suburbs have a few restaurants that would be above-average at best in the city but they cost as much as top-notch city places. Shitburbs have chain restaurants and maybe a Ruth's Chris. It's annoying to drink in the burbs and nightlife is full of cougars, charity galas, boring shit.

Suburbs are way better for outdoor activities and entertaining at home. There's a lot to do if your social calendar doesn't revolve around foodie/bar/art gallery stuff.

Many suburban people work in the city or go out there so I don't know what they're missing out on exactly. It's a little more work to go on a date or meet friends but you can do it pretty easily if you want. If you have a family or don't go out every night it seems CR.

Don't you have to hit a minimum spend or it goes to waste?

Seems like more of a personality difference than urban/suburban thing. Some people are joiners and want a planned social life while others prefer to slide and let do. I know a lot of urban people with very structured social calendars in clubs, volunteer groups or sports leagues, and I live in the suburbs with a pretty unstructured life.

It has nothing to do with having something to do, it has to do with a buzz of activity and just a general "hum" that exists in the city that does not exist in the burbs.

I don't need to be stimulated 24-7, I actually live in a pretty quiet neighborhood now, I just need to be a bit in the middle of it not off on an island 15 miles away.

I like being able to walk down a street and see a lot of people around, I like parks that are filled with people, I like hearing the streets and the thousands of little restaurants and bars that are everywhere. Suburbia, even the prestigious ones, just seem super dull which is intentional.

agreed. great place for growing up. lots of space to explore with friends in a safe environment.

not so great for young adults, which is why they rightfully move to and experience the big city until they are ready to provide that same sense of comfort and safety to their own children. after kids are out of the house, move back to the city.

that's what my parents did and that's what i'll likely do too.

LOL at exploring in a safe environment. I was riding the subway alone at 11. Definitely gives you a lot more confidence and worldliness as a kid that serves you well forever. I will admit to being jealous of your baseball fields though. I played in a league one summer that had a shootout on the other side of the park, lol.

i think it's more the everyday space you have. my friends and i could hop on our bikes and go anywhere. grab a bat, ball and glove and there was always open space for an impromptu homerun derby, or street/pond hockey or tackle football. we'd explore the woods and build forts in the middle of nowhere. just a lot of space to do whatever we wanted outdoors.

but yeah, we only rode the urine stenched subway when we caught games in the city with our Dads. and ljl at any important worldliness gained from riding a freaking subway.

My buddies and I played plenty of home run derby at city parks. Was never an issue. We never built forts. We would ride bikes all over but you were always one/wrong/move away from being blasted by a bus.

The worldliness isn't gained from the subway itself, per se, but the exposure to a lot of different things that you would never be exposed to.

I had a lot of friends from a wide range of social classes and races, religions, etc. A lot of my suburban bros didnt then and still dont and I think that is kind of sad.

i will say i don't understand people who choose to live in the suburbs their entire lives. it seems like it would be a horribly boring existence for adults who didn't have kids.
