The idea of describing the first time mankind walked upright or thinking about how Hemingway would write about a partner doing battle with the law or chronicling the history of the Great Ranch War or developing a rumination on the value of life in the form of a memory of a young boy watching his grandfather struggle to save a small bird before being rocketed back to the present as his mech completes its transformation sequence and he rushes indomitable into the heart of battle or the night-tale of an associate pushed over the edge and leaving a bloody hallmark in a colleague's kitchen is all an outgrowth of the greatbort culture.

I've said this before -- I owe this place, never the other way around. It's the sort of electronic wonder palace where we discuss future manned space policy and the existential threat of bears to the human species and receive zeke's warnings about hyper-intelligent animals and investigate the practical implications of a spectral spiritual dial-in at 11 p.m. eastern on Sunday evening as the Fear rises in our veins and where you and I work, slowly, carefully, precisely, lest it all unravels, to Restore the Hope of the World through a rebooted system, perhaps ushering in the Tenth Iteration. That's not something to be commonly found *anywhere*, whether in the physical or electronic world.

For all the lamentations about XO being "toxic," I find it to be miraculous. It's like the perfect meld of classical and post-post-modern culture, in a slim (woefully under-appreciated -- thanks rach) interface, with a diverse group of participants riffing on everything and everyone. So when I say something like "it's beautiful" or "long live the greatbort and its great brothers" that's not meant to be saccharine or tongue-in-cheek or anything else other than an earnest expression of my appreciation for the place and its participants, forever.
