From the moment the slender brunette's shadow darkened my pebbled glass door, I knew she was trouble.
"I need your help," she exhaled. "I'm - well, I'm missing a rather valuable private possession..." I nodded curtly, hands clasped behind my head. She started again: "I'm missing... if you must know - my panties!"
I ashed my cigar, raised the brim of my fedora and sized her up: 36 - 24 - 28, by the looks of her, and with gams that didn't stop to ask for directions.
Something told me it would be a long night at the office. I'd have to call *mandy* to tell her to take the pirogies off the stove...

Thanks
I'm apprehensive of writing a chapter two - the above, I think, completes what we know about the slender brunette and fish, and if it succeeds it succeeds on that basis. So while in real life the adventures of Fish, P.I. might involve a *mandy* who seems the ingenue but truly is as hard-bitten and shrewd as only an immigrant woman can be, I just don't know enough about that to proceed.

Freed from *mandy* for the evening, I stood up from my chair and glanced out the window at the cold, stormy evening. I turned back to meet her brown eyes looking up at me.
“Where did you last see them?”
She nervously looked down, and clutched her black purse even tighter. I walked across the office, closed the door, took off my fedora and slowly placed it on the rack. She didn’t turn around.
“Look, you have to trust me if you want them back.”
“I know, it’s just…”
A clap of thunder pierced through the night air.
“You’re nervous? Never hired a real PI before?”
“Yes! How did you know?”
“It’s my job, ma’am. That’s why they pay me. Now, about those panties…”

FISH DID NOT CARRY A RUSSIAN SHEEP HAT. He neither carried his Northwestern degree, nor his job offer. The things that Fish did not carry were dictated by necessity. He did not carry a pack of ultra-thin Sensation Plus condoms, which he deemed too restrictive; he did not carry the black and white picture of *.mandy.* that smelt faintly of potassium hydroxide and familiar arguments with his controlling girlfriend over cigarettes.
NOR did he carry guilt at carrying the gams. The slender brunette did not demand it, even as he ashed his cigar on the bedstand after the fact; any reasonable man, he thought to himself, would have done the same -- his mind wheeled through a curiously legalistic justification throughout the act of sexual congress. The slender brunette rolled over and gave him a secretive smile. She did not carry her virginity anymore, and she did not carry the vague suspicions that haunted *.mandy.* as she waited, baking pastries for a man who would carry her no longer-- financially or emotionally. The slender brunette did not carry her panties or her socks or her sweater anymore; all of them were sprawled across the cheap motel floor.

Date: April 10th, 2006 11:36 PM Author: Sepia tattoo therapy Subject: second installment. I have the plot more or less worked out
What she told me was a lie. I could tell it was a lie because the story was too perfect, too coached, too try-this-on-for-size. For a distraught dame who’d just lost her most prized pair of unmentionables, she was able to mention far too many details. That’s the first thing you learn in the detective business: the more coherent the story, the less likely it is to be Pravda.
I interrupted her right as the Jap salesman was home-demonstrating the duster with the telescoping handle on her cream-colored curtains with the pink trim (“Save time for you! Mini-Stick deceptive small, can find hard-to-leach praces”). “Miss, just the essential facts. Where exactly did he say he got your address?”
Her eyes rounded and her breath deepened. “Why, he didn’t say!”
“He didn’t leave a card?” My eyes bored into hers. “Nothing?”
“Well,” she started. But she caught herself, lowering her head as if in shame, sinking her rump deeper into the big black chair. She fell silent. I could tell she’d be a tough nut to crack.
“You know,” I said, standing for the first time since she’d arrived and circling the desk toward her, “I can’t help you if you don’t help me.”
I stood behind her, the hair on my knuckles staring up at me from the cracked leather of her chair. From this vantage point my eyes sneaked right under the neckline of her shiny red blouse to spy the lacy black bra that cupped her milky mounds. For a flash I was a young boy again, hiking up the Ural Mountains with my big walking stick. I leaned in, filled my lungs with her perfume and rumbled, “If you can’t remember, sweetheart, maybe you should come back another time.”
Hook, line, and sinker. She began to fish through her Louis Vuitton purse. “Oh yes! He must've dropped – I found it in the bathroom wastebin – a book of matches. Now, I wasn't sure...”
I released my hold on her chair. She looked up and handed me the matchbook. “There ya go,” I said, snapping my fingers. “Give me till Tuesday night, and we’ll see if I haven’t put my finger on where your panties are.”
I walked her to the door. “Mr. Fish,” she said. “Why, I’d never forgive myself if I got you mixed up in…”
“Just doing my job.” I patted my lower left side to show her I was packing. She was not visibly relieved.
After I let her out, I hoisted up the phone book I’d been sitting on and opened it to “T.” I whistled aloud when my finger arrived at Tanaka's Teriyaki Town. Right off Evanston Ave. Donning my Fedora, I took a swig of the potato vodka I keep where my accounting records are supposed to be. I lit a cigarette with one of the matches. Bingo, bango, bongo. This is fucking sweet. Some hilarious imagery (the curtains, the 'mounds'), the Russian references, his hidden booze. . .
That said, I'd probably like it more if I knew anything at all about fish besides his russian origin.

fish is a hard-luck case at NU. he had lousy first-year grades and a lot of trouble finding work. his girlfriend, mandy, goes to illinois - urbana champaign for law school and public policy (or something equally phony e.g. "labor management science")
both hate affirmative action, and both are moneygrubbing russian jews
so that's the bad news. the good news is despite his failures and neuroses, fish is basically honorable, while mandy can have a very childlike sweetness. they're probably doomed to a wretched life, but at least they'll have each other
in short, they're perfect noir characters. off-kilter, morally ambiguous outsiders.

Where I want to start is the day I left Northwestern. Northwestern is the school that’s in Chicago, Illinois. You probably heard of it. You’ve probably seen the ads, anyway. They advertise in about a thousand magazines, always showing some hot-shot guy at his desk at a law firm. Like as if all you ever did out of Northwestern was get hired at law firms. I never even once saw a recruiter anywhere near the place. And underneath the guy at the law firm’s picture, it always says “Since 1888 we have been molding students into splendid, clear thinking young lawyers.” Strictly for the birds. They don’t do any damn more molding at Northwestern than they do at any other school. And I didn’t know anybody there that was splendid and clear thinking and all. Maybe two guys. If that many. And they probably came to Northwestern that way.

It was after my failure to secure an offer that I hung up my shingle in the south side brownstone. I could defer my loans for a year, but after that I'd have to go off the grid. Mandy was preggers with our first, and I needed cash fast. I took any case that came my way -- divorce, PI, etc. That quickly branched into broader investigative stuff, and I developed a rep for being willing to do the dirty work others wouldn't touch.
I guess that's what brought in the slender brunette. She was 5'9, with gams that ran from here to Poughkeepsie. Her sequined night-black cocktail dress would've been grounds for arrest in Peoria.
The faint scent of lavender drifted from her alabaster mounds as she settled down, crossing her legs and lighting a Chesterfield. Her eyes bored into mine as the smoke drifted past her face, causing little fish to spasm unexpectedly.
"Fish, huh? Is that your name, or your favorite scent?"

Let me guess -- Mandy met one of your Ex's, in a totally random fashion. Maybe she works with her.

Nope. That could also basically happen to anyone. Though, that would totally suck.
On another note, found out my parents still keep in contact with an ex's parents and they all bitch about me occasionally. Cool, no?

It's kind of flattering when an ex's parents keep tabs on you. Means you made an impression.
I have no idea what your unique personal issue would be. I would guess Mandy's pregnant, but I wouldn't think you'd be that bummed by that. It's also not unique.

Their daughter was a bitch who liked to play mind games. This didn't play well with me. Oh, and a bit psycho too.
Well, under the circumstances its no surprise. She got together with another dude when I moved on (a work out buddy of mine who was a farm boy who was attending DeVry - and yes, I am serious), hoped that would make me really jealous. All sorts of drama played out as she continued to play games - worse for dude 2 than for me. It ended when I moved and refused to give her my new contact info. But years later I heard that they got married and were pretty miserable together, she went to a decent school and he resented it, shit like that. So again, not that flattering under the circumstances.
Sure I'd be bummed about that. That would suck ass. But that's not really unique at all.
