Date: December 18th, 2005 3:51 PM Author: Abnormal violent rehab YLS students' constant bitching about New Haven definitely exemplifies a lot of what can go wrong with the school and the student body.
If you're just talking about weather, I grant you that. Horrible horrible weather in New Haven.
But, apart from that, New Haven is a fascinating, architecturally and culturally rich city that really provides unending opportunities for people who actually are interested in most of the social issues YLS students claim to be interested in.
Fact is that New Haven has plenty of great bars and restaurants and interesting non-Yale people. Unfortunately, Yalies tend to shun all this like the plague, because much of what New Haven is about is being working-to-middle-class Italian-American and poor-to-working-to-middle-class African-American. A frightening number of the YLS students who can't shut up about their own holier-than-thou liberalism also would never walk into and enjoy an establishment where commoners eat greasy non-vegetarian food; enjoy non-microbrew-beer; listen to music which is not emo, worldbeat, or jazz; and wear synthetic fabrics. Just like the worst conservative hypocrite-fucks have no interest in human life once it leaves the womb, the worst liberal hypocrite-fucks have no interest in the lives of the poor or just the non-elite unless those people are knocking at their door begging for a hero to save them from oppression.
This phenomenon is definitely not universal at YLS, but it's also not uncommon; and it really blows. |

Getting far away from campus mitigates some of the problem (as would, I'll bet, buying some SCSU or Quinnipiac gear). Anyway, sorry to maybe be on the vitriolic side; have just kind of made defending New Haven my cause celebre since I got to Yale. I went to college in a much more objectively pleasant setting, and I actually appreciate the fact that in New Haven you have to travel much less far to find yourself in an environment that feels spirtually really far from the school.
In any case, this is by far the worst point of 1L year for a lot of people, is my impression. Things got significantly better for me at least once I was in classes with professors I'd freely chosen and once the days were getting longer not shorter. |

If anything, I regret turning down Harvard because I'd get to take classes from more professor(s) in my fields of interest. It's hard to build mentoring relationships with people when they aren't interested in similar issues.
It's not YLS's fault. Taken on its own, it's a wonderful place. It's an island of pleasure in a torrid sea of crime and other shadiness. |

Of course I know YLS is a great place to be. For a number of reasons, New Haven is a terrible place to be. Before I got here, I didn't realize the town would be such a large detractor from the school--but it is HUGE. I'm not talking about social opportunities; I'm talking crime, infrastructure, etc. In my view, these are valid complaints.
Also, given that like one professor at YLS does work relevant to what I want to do, I probably should have gone to a different school. Taking Torts from Guido is amazing, but for me, taking voting rights from Lani Guinier would be just as good, if not better. It's not that YLS is bad, it's just that I sipped too hard on Koh's Kool-Aid and didn't consider all relevant factors before choosing this school. I want prospective students out there to know that even people from bumblefuck who don't care about clubbing or weather also have complaints about living here. That was the point of my initial post. Of course, some fools are so uncreative, childish, or ignorant that they tie everything I say back to AA.
So the moral of this story should be: Prospectives, don't just go to a school because of its prestige. Seriously think about 1) your academic goals and 2) whether you can stomach 3 years of the place when you make your decision.

I concur, and I thought you seriously thought about it when deciding between here and H.
Unless one knows for sure, however, I would caution against #1. That might be further justification to go to Harvard...so you can change your mind and still have lots of course options, but I think Yale's offerings are pretty good except in niche areas like election law and IP. |
