For millennia men have done things only for their instrumental value in acquiring pussy. Women misapprehended these things as having intrinsic value and built a religion around them. This religion is called global capitalism.
"Back in the old day women were forced to maintain close relationships and stay close to their family and loved ones. Things are much better now that we can serve as cannon fodder, write ineffectual memoranda, and spend money on ridiculous baubles to stave off the knowledge of our mortality."

CR. The general story of history, from the perspective of most men, was that the man valued his family over everything and worked outside the house only for the purpose of supporting his family. Going into the coal mines or laboring all day was done simply because he had the physical ability to do work like that and wanted to support the family and _allow_ his wife to stay at home and do the much more instrinsically meaningful and enjoyable work of raising their children and maintaining their home. Men went to war and were blown up, disfigured, or drowned in the mud-- killed and were killed -- because they could and someone had to do it and they were convinced it was necessary to maintain a good life for their wives and children. For the most part, I think women in the working classes recognized this was the nature of the arrangement and appreciated it. I'm sure there were many individual incidents of women ill-served by this arrangement, finding themselves dependent on abusive men or whatever -- but generally the arrangement worked for everyone, especially the women.
But many women (not all) in the upper classes saw the work their fathers and husbands were doing -- medicine, law, running businesses, being involved in politics, etc. -- as interesting and wanted in on it (clearly a different perspective when your husband is a lawyer not a coal miner and you are fairly comfortable -- i.e. bored -- and not just trying to hold things together and scrape by). Ultimately, after a few generations of resistance, the women in the upper classes were able to push their way into these realms without too much of a fight. At the end of the day, it wasn't a bad deal for the men in the upper classes. They didn't mind seeing their daughters take these roles over the sons of lesser families. And dual-incomes allowed them to become even more affluent, putting further separation between themselves and the middle/bottom of the income spectrum.
But, of course, there was a poisonous trickle-down effect. By entering the work force and taking jobs at the upper-end of the income spectrum, the daughters and wives of the upper class unquestionably displaced men at the margins of that class, or those striving to enter it, pushing them further down.
This was a major driver of increasing inequality. Imagine two couples: One elite couple where the man made 200k and his wife stayed at home, and a second, somewhat less elite, couple where the man made 100k and his wife stayed at home. With the influx of elite women into the workforce, the elite man's wife takes the second man's job and he is forced into a lower paying job. So now the first couple makes 300k, and in the second couple the man moves to a 75k job and his wife continues to stay home. Of course, by being pushed to the 75k job, the second man has displaced a third man. And so on and so on.
Eventually what happened is that working class couples who would have preferred to continue living the old way -- the man working to support his family while his wife stayed home to tend to the home and kids -- no longer had that option. Just to keep up, they both had to work jobs that were each shittier than the job which the man previously held and which had previously supported their whole family. Maybe the woman's job involves taking care of rich women's children instead of their own. If they can both even find jobs. More likely at least one can't find anything decent and is on pills, etc.
Meanwhile, the people at the top still have a choice -- work, don't work, work for a few years at six figs and then don't work, etc. So the people at the top like this arrangement -- they are continuing to accumulate more and more capital while having more labor and more consumers in the middle and at the bottom of the economy. They create the ideology of "lean-in" and labor as female empowerment and demean traditional child-rearing, etc. as a way of distracting women in the working classes from what's been stolen from them.
....And then you see Steven Spielberg with his adopted niglet and you realize that even the ruling elite have been brainwashed by their own bullshit - and it's 180. Our species is officially beyond parody.

self-serving self-pitying deceptive trash.
1. for starters most men in history were not free men who owned their own labor
2. men went to war because the technology only allowed them to fight -- women lacked the strength. when mechanized warfare came around, modern states used women in the war effort. or did you think the godless commie soviets were gallantly reserving a soft domestic sphere for their women?
3. the same changes that opened UMC white collar fields to women, also opened them to sons of less fortunate families. an entrenched WASP aristocracy would be just as bad for the vast majority of xo po's seeking to advance careers
look, don't get me wrong: betty friedan should be burned and women who work should all be killed, but your whining needs to come with a huge disclaimer: only applicable to the history of a small coterie of UMC white collar men in the west since 1950. it's a tempest in a teapot in the grand scheme of things

This has legs but I'm not totally convinced. If anything I think you might have it backwards. The rise of consumerism led the lower classes first to abandon stay at home moms and traditional gender roles in order to bring two incomes into the home.

One of my groupchat friends just said this: "Most women I know support efforts to de-traditionalize gender roles. Do they not know what is good for their gender?"
I replied with your comment. I think I might actually be stepping into dangerous territory now. This particular bro is a huge beta and I think he's a serious shitlib and basically worships his shrew fiance.
