the coding boom is very misconstrued imo. coding has become glamorous to college students a la ibanking because it can open opportunities in bigtech (google/fb/etc.), and because the internet has created opportunities for lots of startups. the students stampeding into programming aren’t coding geeks, they are kids who are set on chasing the glamorous industry du jour and that happens to be tech at the moment.

unless you’re going to work for one of these firms or are going into a leadership role with another tech company (which has an interest in leaders with a tech background) you’re mostly just an interchangeable cog as a coder whose valued for his skills and less for his experience. maybe it gives you a skill which ensures employability (for the near-term, at least), but it gives you limited upside (unless you plan on starting your own business) and turns you into a commodity as a worker.
