I love this exchange on Greedy LA:

"If my LA-based firm doesn't match, I'm switching. I'd even move to the Bay Area, where STB and S&C are recruiting associates. 15K more per year in base pay makes it worthwhile."

First response:

"The likelihood of LA shops matching the additional bumps of the NYC firms which have just raised is small, given the length of time it took them to get to $135k.

Please feel free to drop me a line at lalawinfo@yahoo.com to discuss further.

I work with the Southern and Northern California offices of the top NY firms, and I have placed satisfied associates into their practices, including Sullivan and Skadden."

Well, here's hoping the raises will spread, at least.

Bonus announcements and gems like this tie me through.

Yeah it'd be nice if everybody moved to themonkeyscribe.com, but eh, I don't know how this board survives without a search engine either.

"Let's recap:

1) First years in NY based LA offices now earn 5K more than second years at Latham, GDC, and OMM thanks to that paltry 5K bump initiated by GDC - gee thanks!

2) Second years in Latham's NY office (and foreign offices - Random!)now earn 15K more than second years in Latham's LA office - The cost of living is not THAT much more expensive in NY to justify this. Latham should at least bump salary up 10K across the board to eliminate this disparity.

3) Latham associates in LA now face a greater terrorism risk than their counter parts in NY: http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/09/bush.terror/index.html I sure would want a bump in salary to compensate me for that risk!"

"It's great when you're a senior associate in LA or Chicago supervising a team that includes junior people in NY and you are getting paid the same or less than the folks you're supervising. That rocks. No, really, it's sweet."
