Sorry, this is pretty ignorant, I've never seen charts like this before.
It seems like CLS places awesomely well in NYC. Is this a no duh thing, since they're top dog in NYC, or has this been a good year for them?

CLS places very well. If you want biglaw, there really isn't much of a difference as far as placement between them and HLS.
If you want to clerk / go into academia - that is where HLS has an advantage.
Yale, of course, is small, so they still place well just not as much.

i am not in a position to answer that. there are so many nyu/cls trolls and I really don't care about that debate.
If i had to guess, i'd say CLS was slightly better outside of NY but that NYU still placed extremely well in NYC.

I don't want to share an office with an HLS gunner... not looking forward to it.
dood, i'm sure you'll like the firm you choose. If you don't, you can always reinterview 3L year.

again, i'm not sure how much you can go by those, because so few people do it, and everyone is suspect of firm reporting. If you get good grades and apply everywhere, i'm sure you can move up.
also, if you have an offer at another firm that you turned down, they often let you reinterview without going through OCI.

I think Weil has a terrible reputation around NYU. Not that I know definitively by any means, but it's just the sense i get.
At least my impression of it is that it's a fucking sweatshop top 10, but markedly less prestigious then your S&C, DPW, CSM, etc. So anyone with an offer at any of those places is gonna take it over Weil assuming that's the route they want to go (most prestigious offer).
And many kids with offers at Weil who don't have offers at those places choose to take a firm with a better reputation for QOL that's ranked slightly lower.

Only because of their small class size. Its easier to staff a firm with median people if you only need 20 of them.
The lack of yalies and SLS people beyond the 1 is telling.

I don't think this is a problem. I have a feeling that a decent amount of people who go to Davis because its nice aren't really in the market for making partner anyway.
Becoming partner will depend much more on your commitment and abilities than on your competition. This isn't like law school admissions. If there are 10 people in your class who are really bright, they will all have a chance. If there are none, it isn't like they are going to make you a partner in desperation.

LOL I figured I might as well put that out before all the Penn bashing began. As hard as it is to believe, Penn people get offers from Wachtell and Cravath. Penn people get offers from S&C, DPW, Skadden and everybody else without being on law review.
I would also like to point out that these numbers, while helpful, are not the end all and be all. There are people (from Penn that I know of and undoubtedly everywhere else) that got offers from the likes of Cravath or S&C and instead went to secondary markets because they wanted to. As hard as that may be to believe for the people on this board, it does happen. If the incremental prestige of a school increases or decreases based on one more or less person at these firms, at least keep that fact in mind.

That was my point. Other than Harvard with its enormous class and possibly CLS and NYU, every other school classes are so small at each law firm that 1 or 2 people could change the appearance of how the schools placed at those firms.
There are at least... I personally know of 3 that turned down top 10 firms for regional firms. If those three turned down, oh I dunno, say Davis, Cleary, and Skadden, that would make the people on this board go "wow Penn got 3 more people at top firms". As much as people love to go "this school is doing poorly" or "this school is doing well", its kind of hard to tell from this list.

Sure there is: your logic is weak. I'd wager that all else equal, people who'd go to Penn (or other such places) over say Yale (who the hell would want to be in New Haven???--this in itself is an argument) or Harvard are the types of people who aren't purely fixated on prestige or hiring possibilities outside of markets they're considering, viz--people who consider quality of life as important, and see a better quality of life outside of the east coast, for example. This is surely a partial reflection of that fact.
Qualifier: I'm not in LS yet, but I find the amount of attention paid to prestige and rankings of law schools on this board to be incredibly stultifying.

Given its small size, I think Rutgers has so far made the most surprising showing thus far, having placed 7 of its grads in Top 7 firms (according to vault).
There's sure to be at least a few other Rutgers grads landing decent Vault100 jobs this summer, since Latham, Proskauer, Morgan Lewis, Dechert and Reed Smith all have offices within the state who interview on-campus.
Keep in mind the school has LSAT 25/75 percentiles of 154/161.
I wonder if these folks are going to be in a little bit over their head when they begin work in May, especially given the competition they're up against.

There are a couple of things wrong with this:
1) Is the last person in Harvard's class a 5 star also over the Penn or Chicago or NYU or Columbia kids going to Wachtell?
2) Are you saying there is no difference between MVP and Georgetown?
You would almost have to divide relative ranks at each school into the different star rankings. I'm too lazy to do that; anybody want to take a shot?

Virginia places a lot (by self-selection) in Secondary markets - particularly Atlanta. And there's also been only a few DC lists posted which is where a lot of the class goes. Wait for the lists for Covington, W&C, Latham(DC) and a few of the other top DC firms and I imagine UVA's numbers will outpace many of its 'peer' schools. Also there are lot of 'unknowns' in these lists which probably account for some of it as well
And for the same reason that a lot of the people at UVA choose it over higher ranked schools b/c of its laid back reputation and atmosphere, those same people are inclined to choose firms with a reputation for being more laid back and having a 'lifestyle' atmosphere over firms that may be ranked higher. This also contributes to the choice of secondary markets to some degree as well.

What's more reliable than ACTUAL summer placement statistics in firms.
Granted, there's a lot of firms we have yet to see.
And this thread only represents one year, and we might like to see several years of these numbers to get a better understanding of placement.
I personally think this is the best (and most useful) thread posted on XOXO in many months.

The NY info is pretty good already, since most of the top firms are here. We could get LA just by adding Gibson and O'Melveny, although Skadden and Paul Hastings would also help.
There's some other stats that I think could be as good or better (callback %, maybe) but these are pretty interesting regardless. You're not going to seriously persuade anybody that Fordham and GULC students simply like White & Case better than Davis Polk.

Here you have all the biggest and most prestigious firms in the state, minus OMM and GDC. You weren't expecting someone to post the summer stats of Sheppard Mullin, were you?

Not having OMM, GDC, and PH is excluding a couple of hundred LA summers. Quinn, Irell, Munger is all well and good, but those are very small summer classes.
And Chicago is missing all sorts of firms as well. If your goal is to compare Cornell and Columbia for NYC placement, you may have some good data, but for firms that send significant portions of their classes to Chicago and California, there is a TON of missing info.

What I find particularly striking is that T1 Regional Schools seem grossly underepresented.
Wouldn't you expect half of the class to be from such schools?
The presence of T14's across the board in all markets, in place of many regional schools (ex above, Illinois, Loyola-Chicago, Missouri, etc) is striking

most fordham people use non-fordham emails b/c until the middle of last fall, when they switched us over to the ls system (from the ugrad system), the email was highly unreliable.
that said, mofo is famous for calling back a ton of fordham people and then not giving offers. i know of two LR people who were dinged after callbacks, and i was too. haven't heard of anyone who actually got an offer.

I don't know why F&R wouldn't be #1 for any IP person in Minneapolis considering that it is obviously one of the top patent firm in the Nation and they pay 135k plus a 10k signing/graduation bonus. M&G and SWLK do pay 125k and I think that Dorsey pays 125k for patent people, but that is still 20k short of F&R. Faegre pays IP the same as anyone else, meaning only 105k to start, 40k short of F&R.
EDIT: But I guess that I do know someone who is going to Robins Kaplan without looking elsewhere because he only wanted to do IP lit and was afraid that other firms would try to make him to patent prosecution. Plus, I think that he may be in a financial position where the pay is not a factor.

Out of these 480, only 17 (3.5%) have gotten into Vault Top 10 firms, with ZERO showing at powerhouses like Wachtell, SulCrom, Paul Weiss and even lesser Biglaw firms like Wilkie, Gibson Dunn (NY) and MoFo (NY).
And most telling of all...ZERO PLACEMENT IN ANY FIRM OUTSIDE OF NYC!!!

i know of several people, myself included, who got great jobs from fordham outside of nyc (but the fact is, 99% of the people at fordham WANT to stay in NYC). but i'm not going to post my summer class info, even under another moniker.
wachtell and sulcrom are the only two in the V10 that don't recruit on campus at fordham. willkie got dinged by fordham, not the other way around - i know a ton of people who turned down offers from them. for mofo, see my post above (they give a lot of fordham callbacks but not many offers). can't comment on GDC, other than that it's satan's own law firm.
edit - i also know a shitton of people who turned down higher ranked firms (including V10 and V5) for lower ranked firms for various reasons. part of being in nyc for law school, i think, is not being so enamored by the rankings. you can take the time to find the firm that's going to be the best fit in terms of personality and practice areas, so long as they all pay market.

I don't know anything about you, but if it's some tiny firm in some tiny market that nobody but you would be interested in, then that's okay. But if it's a fairly large firm (and keep in mind some pretty small summer classes have been posted on here) that some people might be interested in, I hope you'll reconsider. As I noted in the OP, you're more than welcome to email it to the address above and I'll post it -- I've done a couple already.

"99% of the people at fordham WANT to stay in NYC"
I agree that a majority (perhaps a large majority) of Fordham grads want to stay in NYC, but to say 99% is just assinine.
New York offers the highest billable hour req's combined with the lowest quality of life of any major legal market in the country. NYC offers unbearably humid hot summers followed by freezing winters. Traffic, smog and filth that make you want to kill yourself. Plus, for $2000/month, you get to live in a roach-infested shoebox with a tiny window that provides only 5 minutes of actual sunlight on any given day.
There are FAR more desirable places to practice law throughout the nation (and the world). Any educated person knows this.
Thus, while I'm inclined to agree that many Fordham grad DESIRE to practice in NYC, I believe the rest are relegated to NYC by default, since the school has virtually ZERO name-recognition outside of NY, NJ and CT.

who the fuck asked you? clearly, you know absolutely nothing about fordham or its students (or nyc for that matter). 99% might be an exaggeration, but 90% wanting to stay in NYC after graduation is FOR SURE on the low end. in fact, for oci this year, they had to send out a second request for people to bid on many of the non-metro area firms because so few students picked them in the initial bidding (and several of these were v50 in major markets, so it's not like they were podunk local firms in butt-fuck idaho).
the main draw of fordham is its location and placement in nyc (it's clearly not the buildings, nor the administration, nor the cheap tuition...). you don't go here if you want to practice in chicago, or dallas, or la, unless you lived in nyc before law school and don't want to move yet. but those people are few and far between.

i bet most of the "unknowns" in the summer class breakdown are fordham kids, because fordham's email is notorious for its unreliability.
i have first-hand knowledge of 3 declined sullcrom offers, 3 willkie acceptances, and 5 DPW acceptances. not sure about cravath -- at least 2 are going there this summer, but 1 declined a callback (and generated the rage of the OCI interviewer).
finally, fordham students are summering in SF, LA, DC, and boston. not in droves, of course, but it's better than nothing.

No, you are confused. ONLY Fordham students turn down offers. Everyone else at every other school is so thankful to have any offers that they accept the first one they get right away.
You are correct that this Fordham "we turned down offers" trolling is bullshit and idiotic.

you completely missed the context of why the turned down offers thing was posted - no one's claiming that fordham students turn down more offers than other school.
it's not trolling, it's in response to someone above who said that fordham wasn't placing people into v10 firms (i.e., that fordham students were shut out). then, it was just pointed out that fordham people did have offers at some of the firms named, but didn't accept them.
the only thing that's bullshit is the claims that fordham isn't doing well in placement.

I completely understand the context. There are students at every school who turned down V10 offers. The difference is that there also many people who accepted them from those schools. You could say "oh my god, less than half of Harvard's class had V10 offers." The response of course would be "no, many people have turned them down for PI, lower ranked firms, government, etc." However, if you notice, Harvard still did pretty well.
The point is that Fordham people have not turned down firms in any greater proportion than other schools, so to claim that the numbers are misleading is ridiculous. If there are very few Fordham students in the V10 ranks, this means they didn't get proportionally as many offers as the schools who have higher placement. And lets not forget how ridiculously large Fordham's class is.
Fordham isn't a bad school, I almost went there. I just think that the claim that they have great placement in top firms is ludicrous when you look at the numbers.

I've been thinking about how to better organize this info too. Yours looks nice so far but it'll also get unwieldy after a couple more firms. But obviously being able to hide comments under each chart is one big plus.

to be fair, I don't think they give as many offers to as wide a group as Cleary or STB. If S&C made offers to all of the Cleary / STB people, I'm sure they'd get 20 people too. They seem to prefer a top performer at Rutgers than a median level performer at HLS.
Also, Cleary got PWN#D!!!1 this year - 5 people? That is less than S&C, and a little crazy when you consider how many offers they make.
DPW and Cravath seem to routinely pwn S&C, though.

"I don't think they give as many offers to as wide a group as Cleary or STB"
if you look at the last few years at HLS, you'll see that Cravath rountily pwns both S&C and DPW, indeed DPW somewhat pawns S&C, @ harvard. it's not about how many harvard kids go to each firm, it's who gets offers at what places and who accepts where. it's common knowledge that median kids routinely get offers at STB & Clearly and maybe even DPW.
last year harvard numbers (which say a lot more than total #'s from HLS in each summer class):
CSM: 82 on campus interviews (remember, there is a self selection factor here); 43 got callback offers; 38 took the callbacks; 23 got offers; 16 accepted (at least 5 of the 7 being WLRK kids).
DPW: 148 on campus interviews(again, remember self selection v. CSM); 75 get callbacks; 66 take call backs; 39 get offers; ONLY 13 (that's right only 13) accept
STB: similar numbers as DPW, except SIXTY get offers; only 15 accept
S&C: similar numbers as STB & DPW; 31 offers; only 8 accept.

This data is incredibly misleading. There are like 2 classes for DC...and a few Cali markets and the rest all NY.
Where are all the DC-Philly-Boston-Atlanta-Houston-Cali listings? C'mon people! I don't give a rat's ass about the NY market....

Yes, I appreciate the stats. However, the focus is on NY and many potential law students analyzing V25 placement may be misled by focusing on these stats (assuming they don't want the NY market).
Nonetheless, I think it's awesome..I'm just really eager to see results from other markets..

i hate to point out the obvious, but there are other factors people consider when deciding where to live and work. if NYC has the corner on "prestigious," how come some of the best and brightest choose to live and work in other cities?
like it or not, some people think NYC is a shithole with a cost of living that does not justify living there.

It is my understanding that ANY rejection after callback in the LA office is extraordinarily rare, and the offers are extended the same day.
As for the other offices, Harvard stats show 5 offers out of 9 callbacks in NYC, and 8 out of 10 in SF in 2004.

Your methodology is indeed retarded or, at the very least, your results are.
You've taken an entirely negligible difference between UT and UCLA determined that UCLA is a far superior school. You've also decided that UT is complete shit even though UT seems to be popping up in a fair amount of these lists, though, admittedly, in smaller numbers. Still, placing students at Williams & Connolly in DC and Jenner in Chicago as well as a number of other pretty good firms is nothing to really scoff at. Your clear bias is pretty laughable.
Edit: Also, for the record, most Minnesotans would just be confused by a Texan. They would wonder if the Texan was retarded or just lost. Minnesota is a pretty insular place, especially if you're not from WI or the Dakotas (the states that tend to feed into Mpls) or if you're not from somewhere clearly better than MN, like NY, DC or CA. On the reverse, Texans don't go to Minnesota because it's too cold. The average Texan doesn't think there's anything weird about closing down schools because there might be freezing rain or *gasp* snow. In Minnesota, people ride their bikes in freezing rain, and on the first 45 degree day of the year, people wear t-shirts and act as if it's 80.

Thanks. I think this info has been interesting for everybody, and it's similar to what IH and GTO were doing in the early stages of their placement study.
I think the circular debate that happens here is interesting. Firms are seen as more prestigious when they attract more students from prestigious schools, and schools are seen as more prestigious when their students get hired by prestigious firms.

Biggest Problem with this thread:
People are using the email addresses from the mass emails sent out by computer. 40% of the summer associates at my firm used undergrad email addresses instead of law school emails addresses. I think 40% is high, but there are a lot of people still using their undergrad email addresses on the resume. Thus, the data from this entire thread needs to be sanitized.

I'll never be individually ranked at my T14, nor will most of the people viewing this board so who gives a **** that Yale has the most Scotus clerks? Or that NU got 1 in this year and GULC, Cornell, and Duke didn't? Makes no difference.

I think I know one of the Columbia summers. Wonder what the Southwestern guy's class rank is.
Sidley just reported its 2005 financial info btw. PPP up 21% to $1.23m. http://www.legalweek.com/ViewItem.asp?id=27878

Generally for a non-T50 School...you can be top 5% but if the firm doesn't recruit there then you simply won't get a chance.
T25-30--top 10-15%ish and the school must recruit there
T15-30ish (Emory included)- Top 1/3 will make you competitive
T14- top 75%..or even further back if you attend a T6

You're right, those header rows would suck. It'd ultimately to be nice, too, to have each school listed independently, where each ends up, then breakdowns of % of class in V-5, % V-25, etc.
In other words, lots of work. Let me know if I can help, I've got some things compiled.

here's a thought: why not e-mail all the Career Services offices of T-30 and ask for their breakdown of 2L summer placement by market/firm?
it would be interesting to see if any of them would actually provide such detailed info, but you'll never know if you don't ask.

Schools don't keep track of this info this early -- they might do a survey at the end of summer, but that's it. HLS has some pretty good recruiting statistics, but I think that's based on info provided by the firms.
Also some people (including me) are interested not just in how certain schools place, but also what certain firms' summer classes look like.

didn't know you wanted this info for right now. i see your point.
most firms (e.g. Williams & Connolly) post their previous summers' schools on their websites. again, this is not info on the upcoming summer, but it's a point of reference nonetheless. recruiting doesn't change drastically from year to year.

I think he meant something different from the fact that t14s occasionally show up on a list outside their regions. Corenll and Penn appear to be no different from NU or Duke with regard to how many lists they show up on.
Whatever, though.

yeah. they were complaining over nothing really.
it's my opinion that they shouldn't even rank the 2nd tier. 2nd tier means one thing: "solid regional school" and there's no way they'll ever stop being a solid school for the houston-area.
