I need to see his newest one, which I heard was good.

But when Verhoeven is on, man, he's on

You should check out "Flesh and Blood" - his first English film. Didn't receive a full US release but it's 180,

Elle, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Black Book, Flesh and Blood. His only dud is Showgirls, but it's still very watchable and entertaining, in a "so bad it's good" kind of way.

Verhoeven is A master of suspense - on par with De Palma or Hitchcock. The movies are pure entertainment, and don't have the tired baggage of intellectualism/shitlibbery. The man just wants to make movies with insane plot twists, gorgeous women, and embedded anti-pc themes to discomfort critics. I will take a new Verhoeven flick over Coen bros or PTA any day of the week.

MFCR. I have yet to see a movie that can stand up to Basic Instinct as a sexual thriller, and that's not even mentioning Total Recall or Starship Troopers

elle was alright. i love the last shot, elevates the movie imo. hollow man was a fucking disaster though. overall, yes, hes amazing. i never liked basic instinct too much as a thriller, it always seemed liek it was making fun of itself as an erotic thriller. it was always sabotaging all the tropes that it followed, like almost immediately. its a trip. visually its pretty dope, too. grew up watching total recall on repeat in middle school, and always loved robocop. robocop is an interesting movie in that its kinda funky and silly but sometimes just out of nowhere it becomes very dark and nasty. crazy switches between silly macho and sci fi and then next thing you know its like almost an opera and a horror film. yeah, overall i like taht german dude.

had to add though: hes def not the best or at the top of his game right now. his glory days are long gone, friend.

I really enjoyed Elle. The rape video game sequence and the megashrew's son not realizing he was raising a nig baby made me lol hard.

Part of what I like about Verhoeven is that he's totally balls to the wall, constant plot twists, wild swings in mood/tone, and yet they still make sense and seem cohesive. All of his movies would fall apart in the hands of lesser directors. He also loves schlock, objectifying women, and action - doesn't seem to have any sort of lib artistic pretensions or sentimentalism.

Agreed that hollowman is a mess. Showgirls is a deeply flawed movie that people shit on, but I still really enjoyed it.

his movies make fun of themselves, basically. very meta style. he pokes fun at our fascination with violence and sex, imo. but then he uses them at the same time for good effects in his movies. its all very hallucinatory. feels like vertigo when you watch his films.
