My cousin's son is 24 and is working at FB. He bought his first house before 25. He got a job with them before even graduating college, was an intern for 6 months and then was offered a full time job.

Is this credited at all? Or does the job suck?

if you are into math and science and technical challenges and don't care much about the application area it can be fine. how did he buy a house after three years? even if he was a superstar making 400k a year, that's not easy in that area.

it's tough, especially right out of college.

most of the high iq kids who would've otherwise gone into finance are going into tech.

This dude started to participate in hackathons since he was a freshman in college, so by the time he was a junior he knew a lot more than his professors and got the job with FB.

why do you keep bringing up his professors, were they also applicants for the FB jobs

also most CS profs can't code because CS isn't about coding

the people right out of school who are working for FB/GOOG have very strong credentials from top programs

literally all of my friends who went to FB/GOOG/AAPL graduated from one of the two relevant honors programs at UT

their coders are not just code monkeys but have strong theoretical CS backgrounds, Google doesn't just pay code monkeys six figures

FB's coders are doing things like creating React Redux and React Native, not just building webshites

Google is retardedly elite when it comes to hiring coders

professional coder here.

your son is smart and talented. getting an internship with them is difficult. it's a lot easier to get hired by FB/GOOG after working full-time in the industry for a few years. He's definitely a top 5% programmer at least

It’s the best work I can get for the money. I think I’m overpaid relative to my skill level (no degree self taught). There are some perks like dressing casually and it can be quite “chill” at a good place. It’s also nice that you can just kind of take long periods off and no one really cares. Very easy to change roles or find new work. No licensing requirements etc.

Is it the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done, no. But it gave me a legit profession without having to fuck with grad school

Well, the interviews are fairly intensive, but there are books to study for them. And they also hire a TON of entry level coders.
