cravath is serously an unprestigious sweatshop that'll take ANYONE from HYS. But for fordham, you need top 15% probably.

top 10%, probably, unless you bid them number 1 or 2, in which case you'll almost definitely get a screening interview regardless of rank. i didn't even bid them last year, so i don't know if numbers woulda cut it.

Cool, how hard is it to get a job there once you make the cutoff? Obviously fit comes into play, but do you really have to be like top 1% or something?

it looks like they give callbacks to about half the people they screen at fordham, and offers to most of those they callback. fall 2004 was 19 callbacks, 13 offers. most prior years it was more like 5 callback, 5 offers.

There was an article about biglaw in the NYT and the white shoe firm they referred to was Cravath. I then began to do research on law as a career and firms themselves, mainly Cravath, and the tightknit family qualities of Cravath really attract me. I also like how they are focused in NYC and the only little satellite office is in London (it would be cool to summer there!)

you're such an idiot. do you think that getting stoned prior to the exam excuses your poor score? why do you even bother to consistently reiterate this pathetic aspect of your application cycle? you had so many options: cancel, postpone, retake. your mistake wasn't getting stoned, it was your inability to strategize, an albatross you will carry forever. no matter how hard you troll for Fordham, you can not disguise your eternal TTTness.

They have had some interesting cases in their lit history. Have you read "The Partners" by James B Stewart? he's a former associate there who went on to publish/edit (?) American Lawyer. Good stuff on the AT&T trials (prominantly featuring Boies).

I was a para there for a little over a year. Didn't strike me as a tight knit place from observations and talking with younger associates, but who the fuck knows. Paras see so goddamned little, through bleary eyes to boot.

Interesting. I'm going to check out that book. How bad are the hours from what you did see? I meant tight knit in the sense of lockstep raises, staying with your class forever, never letting outsiders in. Seems like my kind of place.

Hours seemed completely miserable, especially for first years. I pulled 80-90 during busy cycles as a para (doc review, discovery pushes, ramp up before filings) and the associates were always a little more than that.

It was busy more than it wasn't. I was also under a partner who had busy/good cases. Some of the older partners had slower/less cases and their associates probably did too.

I'm sure someone here knows a lot more about this.

I fostered relationships with strange russians on the F-train on the way to work on weekends, and with foreigners who had the city's traffic problems worked out in their heads in car service home. So all's not lost.

Seriously, check out that book. The Cravath chapter makes them sound sweet as fuck, and the other chapters give a nice look at the culture and values of the other big NYC firms, at least the culture in the 70's.

the V5 firms are the worst of the worst to work for. they don't get those rankings by being nice to associates. they love to trick newly minted lawyers who come from poor backgrounds into working crazy hours by throwing around words like prestigious and V5.

the partners laugh all the way to the bank (actually they send someone else to the bank because they don't have time to go) because they pay about the same as everyone else yet get the associates to work significantly more time

here's what happens to suckers who buy into the mythology;

Like all new Cravath associates, [William O.] Douglas quickly learned that the practice of law on Wall Street was a great deal less glamorous than he had imagined. New associates were crammed two to an office no bigger than a large closet and expected to bill three hundred hours per month. . . It was not unusual for his work day to last until two, three, or even four o'clock in the morning, whatever time it took to prepare the papers for the next day. Then, he rode the train home to Pelham for a couple hours of sleep, a shower, a fresh set of clothes, and a quick cup of coffee with Mildred before racing back to start the same cycle all over again.

--Bruce Allen Murphy, Wild Bill: The Life and Legend of William O. Douglas, p. 53

I wonder if anything has changed.
