1) Having cancer at a young age. I think the early pain and fear of death screwed up my brain and perma-screwed with my cortisol levels. It instilled a hairtrigger flight/avoidance/dissociative reaction to anything relatively unpleasant I've had to face in life.
2) First time I cheated on a girl. I was 19 or 20 and it was the first time I truly violated my core beliefs. Integrity was everything to me and in that moment I basically threw away all of my self-worth. |

I did a complete reset for sophomore year, which ended up working out pretty well but still I always felt like I didn't belong or couldn't hack it. |

Consistently solid reviews, I was always available, didn't even take a honeymoon, kissed ass the appropriate amount, etc. Then, out of the blue, "hey it would be great if you could have your stuff out by the end of the day" - this broke me but in a good way. Made it very clear as to the "importance" of my work, my replaceability, employer loyalty, trusting superiors to be looking out, etc.
2. Life: My dad cheating on my mom long-term and very openly has been a major mind-fuck. Not the sex--I'd be much more comfortable if he got HJs from strippers or fucked whores--but knowing how unhappy he is in his marriage that he would have what is very close to a second marriage is close to earth-shattering. I love my dad and we chat, but there's an elephant in the room that will always be there. He is not open to sniffing my disapproval of his decision here. |
