They won't starve, but will have less family contact. I am hopeful the older one may make it socially if he can stay out of trouble. I think it was Will Rogers who said a man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be. I am pretty adaptable, and it's amazing how the bizarre seems commonplace after a while.
We have a second home in another part of the country, so we get away from the daily personal conflict for a few months/year.
Nevertheless, it's hard. In the early days of all this we went to about a million support group meetings. Invariably I was the only man. The pattern was for the husband to split while the wife kept the kid at home trying to "fix" him. See Sandy Hook. |

It would have been hard, as I was from a poor family and had to pay my own way. Maybe I could have been more adventurous? I find it very hard to find retrospective regrets. For every choice I made that I might have made differently there would have been different outcomes. Can't say I feel like I particularly missed anything.
One thing I lived with that is now gone was military conscription. The draft really limited young healthy males' options. You either were in school, working in a deferred category job (though that went away, too), or in some branch of the service. So between 21 and 25 or so options were reduced. Also, the economy went totally to shit in the early 1970's.
Sorry to be so boring. I really have trouble finding regrets. |

I had a lot of aches and pains, but those went away when I stopped taking a statin. I had a coronary artery calcium scan and had zero calcified plaque, so I stopped the drug. Feel much better. My sister is 88, and she has really tanked since age 85. The slide is non linear.
I still bike and play golf, but don't run any more. |

I discovered that after working at a firm after 2L. 3L I started a business with a friend and didn't go to class much. Worked in law one year after graduating while getting the business off the ground. I didn't have much debt. LS was much cheaper then. I had a scholarship at H and GI bill, plus I worked part time, so debt was minimal. I had about $5K ($30K in current money) in undergrad debt, but it wasn't bad. Also, I made more in the business than in a law firm. However, law pay has gone up a lot, at least in the top tier.
I would not recommend law school unless you really think you would like practicing law and can get into a top program. CS is academically much more challenging. Law school is ridiculously easy. I think the computer tech world is a young person's game, but that's just my impression.
What did I hate about law? Mind numbingly boring work and the apprentice structure. Had I gone to LS straight out of college I might not have minded, but I had a grad degree and 3 years in a pretty responsible job under my belt, so it was shock to be treated like a grunt. I was intellectually able to be a lawyer, but my personality was not a good fit.
Since you are in academia, have you thought about moving into university administration? Salaries are sky high in the larger/more prominent places. |

It seems as if you had a pretty good sense of yourself then. You never were that tempted with regards to the rewards of striving for partnership or anything like that in law? (It seems like the scuttlebutt here implies that when you were in law in the 60s/70s/etc, those were the golden years when you could just keep your head down, grind, and then make millions as a partner - would this be accurate to assume?) Also you never considered starting your own firm if you didn't like the big firm structure?
I know the cynics on this board would eviscerate me probably for wishful thinking but the idea of making six figures and then hitting larger rewards down the line in law is pretty tempting to me right now. I earn like $30k a year now.
You're probably right about CS. It seems like by the time I'd finish with re-training in my mid 30s, I'd be an old fogey in the field. Credentials like a PhD or prestige seem like they matter far less. |

Owning your own business is the most time intensive of all. I had the least time when I was doing tech start ups, but the work wasn't soul crushing - at least not as much. The time demands weren't what made me not like law - it was the nature of the work and the people I dealt with - including clients. Nobody comes to see a lawyer because they are happy about something.
Wish I could have spotted the impending mental illnesses sooner when there was the possiblity of intervention; however, the awful truth about treatments is that they are not terribly good and many of the meds come with horrible side effects. |

Hard to be odder and more vapid than that. Accumulate (rather than collect) old electronic equipment, though I do have something like a collection of certain vintage electronic items, all of which are in use. I enjoy diagnosing and fixing vintage electronics when they break. I can understand the schematic diagrams, don't need a logic analyzer, and can see the parts.
I like cars - own 7 of them plus a tractor. 2 vehicles are pickups. Yes, I haul stuff - have acreage.
Do a lot of vegetable gardening. Eat it and give it away. Spent a lot of time perfecting a critter proof fence.
I am still professionally active on a part time/consulting basis. Is that "intellectual?" Hard to say. I am down to one client (a firm), and fill a kind of "of counsel" role in which I can either bring in my own business or help others. Get paid either on fee split basis or hourly, depending on the need. Requires some amount of travel, so that is always entertaining.
Read a fair amount and tend to keep up with various scientific trends, though my math is rather rusty. Also spend quite a bit of time on a volunteer board (addiction services). I have really enjoyed that gig and have learned a lot. I think my business/finance experience has been helpful in that role and like feeling that I am of some use to somebody.
Spend some time managing my own investment portfolio.
I have a lot of friends with whom I talk and correspond frequently. Many hours spent with family. 35 of them were here for a New Year's party.
Fixing broken things in the 4 houses I own sometimes feels like a full time job.
Do not like video gaming - burnt out on Atari asteroids, etc. around 1980. Did write one game myself long ago for which I programmed the Atari graphics co-processor. It was a gravity well spaceflight game.
I spend a surprising amount of time helping other people with their problems. Sometimes I feel like Marlon Brando at the "Godfather" wedding when he is holding audience with all the people who want favors. I guess I should feel proud, but sometimes it gets a little too much. I really don't like dispensing advice, as I am not even sure about telling myself what to do. Sometimes folks just need someone to listen to them. Did not see that particular hobby coming.
