Basically the company is structured so there's a top dog CEO with a C-suite staff, below them VP-level folks who run departments. They all make the most pay, obviously, but many times more than the people below them even though there's no way their value is multiple times the people below them. They work great hours (a lot work 8am-4pm). Many of them are not experts in anything in particular.
Every single person below them, so about 90% of the company, is a fucking cog. There are no raises. There are almost no promotions. No one is plucked out for VP roles. There's a total wall. You exist at this level to promote the work of the VPs and higher. A lot of people at this level are experts. Many advanced degrees. They know way more than the people above them but they exist to make that information flow up, so the VP and above crowd doesn't look stupid.
I assume this is quite common?

1. This is why you NEVER go in-house. This is why you become a lawyer to begin with ffs.
2. Everything you are witnessing is based on Clique. America has the strictest Clique System in the world. Source: http://www.cliquetheory.com

Actually I legitimately think of CLIQUE THEORY when I look at this conceptual map
what do you mean by "this is why you become a lawyer to begin with"

But what about the structure? is that the same in all corps?
I have a pretty good gig and I am risk averse, so I don't think it makes sense to go on my own or whatever
-I make 160K base with a 20K bonus
-I come in around 10am and leave at 4pm and WFH 1-2 days a week
-During work I do another side gig and bring in an extra 5-10K a year
-I manage two employees and so they do most of the "grunt work" that I don't want and I for the most part strategically position myself to only work on stuff with visibility to others in the company
-Tons of time off with travel only once a quarter
-My boss is located in another office so they aren't around to monitor me
-I wear pretty casual clothing to work
-I'm considered *the* expert in my company at my role with plenty of kudos from the CEO and leadership
-I could probably become a VP if I stick around which would mean 225K+ with the same hours
-In all honesty, I probably can never be fired

sounds like you're a talented and productive guy and you should start your own company
you'll make a lot more money and contribute a lot more to society that way (assuming you work in a productive and not parasitic industry)

Not too many ways to beat this.
- start your own business. not easy at all.
- a variation of above. you could go the contracting route which allows you to make an income commiserate with your skillset alone. but then you have to have a good skillset and be good at it.
- you get an MBA from a top 10 school and try to climb up the ladder. long hours, no guarantee of payback.

Sounds like a standard company so far.
Some signs it's a racket:
People quit suddenly, with no notice given, running away in fear. Low-level managers and junior employees seem constantly on edge and are too confused to understand what's really happening. Way too many young people are hired. Middle managers that aren't trusted by upper management have probably figured things out and seem either scared or constantly stressed beyond reasonable levels, avoiding interaction with most people that haven't yet figured it out so they don't accidentally say the wrong thing. Management will have coworkers and sometimes "security" spying on you, making the untrusted but aware employees paranoid. If you're mildly chatty, office gossip will tell you something weird is going on or that someone's been threatened or some other weird thing has happened. The work environment is generally pretty terrible for most people, designed to kick people out before they figure out too much. Legit local third party recruiters give you a bad vibe when you mention the company. Upper management operates like a crime family. You are constantly given completely ridiculous, impossible deadlines.

These are extremely important points. You might go in thinking, “oh, it’s just a job,” but then everything becomes a disaster and you still have to deal with the aftermath once you leave.
More signs:
You do not meet your actual manager during interviews, and you change managers frequently. Sometimes you might not even be sure who your actual manager is. You may feel like you’re going crazy or becoming paranoid — the power and extent of gaslighting is much worse than you’d think. You might feel like you’re under surveillance, because you actually are. A petty criminal and/or homeless person may be hired to harass or assault you, or worse. A coworker makes a thinly veiled threat. Some coworkers might show signs of PTSD. There’s an extreme culture of secrecy. If it’s a big enough company, people drop hints on Glassdoor. If you give a standard two weeks notice and don't just quit immediately, and management suspects you're aware of what's happening, trusted employees will test you to see how much you know, what you'll say about the company when you're gone, which company you're going to, etc. so they can keep track of you and spot a potential snitch.
I have either observed or experienced everything I’ve listed.

This is typical. Slick organizations disguise it with free lunches and training programs, but you are just meat on the hoof. I developed that insight while while raising money from and being screwed over by venture capitalists. Cowgod is right: Clique Theory explains it. You can only escape by becoming a proprietor. Even when you are CEO of a company, which I have been twice, you end up being screwed by prep/jock investors, board members, and customers. When I was filling a senior nerd position in a major corporation a recruiter told me I was doomed because my bigco executive suite was full of "average bears" and I wasn't tall enough. I thought he was full of shit, but it turned out to be true. I left the world of organizations early and have been a sole proprietor for 15 years in my retirement. I still get hosed by prep/jock clients, jut at least I am MASTER OF MY DOMAIN. However, bills must be paid, etc. so an alternative is to do the usual thing and just lead a life of quiet desperation.
