Think of NYC as an example. Its GDP per capita didn't fall by 90% when its population increased tenfold. In fact, its higher population actually led to higher productivity and higher wages. Economists have shown that big compact cities actually have higher productivity/wages because their size allows more specialized labor markets and other agglomeration effects.

According to urban economists, housing costs are a consequence not of being in a concentrated area, but of zoning restrictions. Most major American cities are surrounded by rings of single-family homes where it's illegal to build even duplexes or small apartment buildings or even single-family houses on small lots, even next to mass transit stations. This results in a supply-demand imbalance. Housing costs in Tokyo plummeted after they liberalized their zoning regime in the past decade.

School overcrowding should theoretically not be an issue, since the higher GDP per capita should allow construction of more schools without increasing tax burdens.

Environmentally, dense cities enable mass transit which is not viable at lower densities as well as shorter average commutes which results in less vehicle miles traveled and lower pollution.

I'd say the most compelling argument against this, at least in a place like NYC, is that it presumes a government that is functional enough to build schools and transit and other infrastructure to provide for expansion of population. The US seems incapable of building shit recently.
