Oh look, the guy gets involved with some hot slut that dropped out of Columbia because she couldn't hack it and is in an open relationship. Uh, ok. Oh, we'll make it more interesting, she's a FEMINIST! Wow! Oh, but we need to spice this up. He'll fund a gay bar. Oh, let's do a gay sex scene! Okok, cut to a hooker on the street. We'll have her fuck a John and argue with her pimp. Again. When it starts to get boring we'll have a pimp beat someone up or stab them (it can be the hooker, the John, or someone else). Ok, cut to a porn shoot. Look, it's porn! Ok, we've got to mix this up a bit. Here's an honest black cop in a somewhat racist corrupt precinct. Do we win an award?
It is fine, it just could be much better. It survives on focusing on an interesting subject and time period rather than on good writing, plot, etc. |

the show creators said they wanted to make a spiritually true-to-life homage to that time and place. maybe they did, and really just couldn't help themselves. either way the show reveals a lot more truth about the perverse fantasy world David Simon lives in than it does about its purported subject matter |
