I think somebody mentioned this on the bort recently and its a 130 aspect of the industry

Tech pays well but requires you to be constantly learning, often outside of work. This makes tech workers burn out easily and also makes the industry favor young engineers who have time to grind or study outside of work

major game-changing languages/libraries (like react, for example) only come out every 1-2 years and if you're smart you can get the gist of them (not be an expert by any means) within 1-2 weeks. doesn't seem too difficult to stay on top of your shit, and you don't fall behind the competition as everyone else has to learn the new stuff too.

learning on the micro-scale is always part of the job. like reading documentation and figuring out how this or that API works. so that just comes with the territory. it's expected that you have to do this and perfectly okay to bill for/spend time on during work hours.

I'm not a lolyer or banker or MD so I shouldn't speculate but the thread I was referencing suggested that there are other high paying fields that don't evolve that much over time

Don't remember, sorry. It wasn't profound - it basically just said what I did earlier in the context of choosing career paths, what the next decades will bring, etc

The field does change on the scale of years but you have to end up learning shit all the time anyway, just in order to use other peoples' code/libraries/APIs. This is expected though and part of work (I've billed entire days for "research").

Basically, it's a field you shouldn't get into if you aren't willing to learn. If you are okay with learning and doing research on a daily/weekly basis, then adapting to major changes (like react) shouldn't concern you much.
