I haven’t seen an Avengers movie but i’m willing to bet they’re fairly well acted, given the cast, well directed for what it is and that the effects and technical aspects are all top notch. Look at an equivalent movie from the 90s and you’ll probably see a genuinely bad film (think the Schumacher Batmans, Blade movies etc...) You end up with a lot fewer corny awful movies like Suburban Commando. What you lose is any type of creativity or “risks” - everything is safe processed cheese for the masses.
A good comparison would be Batman (1989). If you watch it now, the special effects and fight scenes seem dated, and overall the movie feels “old” compared to something like Avengers. But Batman had a historically great acting performance, relied on its story and dialogue and also made you think. You rooted for the bad guy even though he was evil, and it made you laugh. The stunts were more complicated so an adult would appreciate them more. For example the fugitive with the guy jumping in the waterfall, which academically is much more interesting than any CGI action scene in black panther, but visually is much more basic of an experience. Falling Down is another good example of this. The downside of this is that there were many more forgettable, painful awful movies like suburban commando or the ninja turtles movies, and today you are much more likely to see a “good” movie than a “bad” one, which of course is all most people want anymore. The folks who want though provoking stuff can specialize and watch Netflix and HBO or whatever in ways not possible in 1989. It’s rare that a major movie can compete on this level - there will be blood, mad max and Annihilation are some exceptions that I thought were actually pretty good, but they won’t make money like avengers.
So I agree with you in some sense that the movies today serve the current client base better than the 1989 movies would, and critics (beyond all being captured by GC) have less of a function to serve vs the 1980s and 90s when there was a lot more variety and of course less ways to check online. |
