Here is her story: She is a white girl that checked the "African American" box on her application to Columbia because some ancestor of hers was from the Carribean. Needless to say, she got the ridiculously large AA benefit that black females get. Once she got in to Columbia, she didn't do so hot.
On her resume and in her firm interviews, she made it very clear that she wanted AA bonus in hiring for being "African American" - at least one firm famously called her out on it in a VERY harsh manner (Simpson Thatcher).
I guess people dont like a white girl that tries to play the black race card. |

She interviews with a young associate that is actually AFRICAN, like straight off the boat from Zimbabwe or somewhere. It somehow got brought up in the interview that she considers herself African-America, so he proceeded to tell her: "Just becuse your Ancestors RAPED SLAVES does not make you black."
I kid you not. The "your ancestors raped slaves" line is priceless... I don't expect people to believe me that somebody actually told this to someone in an interview, but I kid you not that it happened. Perhaps other CLS people can back me up. |

I know two guys who pulled something similar. One totally white guy in college had had a number of generations of his British ancestors live in an African country, so he checked African American. Another guy in high school was probably a quarter or eighth mexican, but didn't look it at all, had a totally white/english last name, and was religiously jewish. He checked off latino/hispanic stuff. In terms of actual blood I always thought he probably was justified, but no one at school appreciated it much. |

She has a white name and looks distinctively white. But I guess if I were in her position I might also say that I was "african-american"... its the system that is messed up, not her choice of which box to check.

I mean, if one side of your ancestral line raped the other side, you've still got both in you. Many (most? no idea) lighter skinned african americans are the product of master/slave rape from way back when - so their ancestors raped slaves (also ancestors)...
If he was going to take issue with her because she was visually white, fine, but the ancestor/rape comment rather misses the mark. |

Interestly, compare him to another friend who was half Mexican, with an hispanic sounding last name, but who looked and sounded just as white --> no one cared. It was just the difference in the last name. If anything, this guy seemed even whiter. |
