There's a lot of good grounds for criticizing this "Math ethnic studies" rubric, but I don't think that's one of them. I think the point is to teach kids that math isn't just a White or European thing but something developed over time by lots of cultures. |

So by emphasizing mathematical developments by multiple cultures and encouraging students to think of all sorts of people as mathematicians in some ways, it will help a greater swath of students develop hard math skills. That's not going to be some sort of silver bullet, but it actually might plausible help a few students.
The oppressor/liberation stuff is ideological, quasi-religious hogwash. |
