Jfc why did you come back to societtty? My eventual goal (prob wont happen for 15-20 years) is to go completely off-grid. Currently reading homesteading magazines etc just for fun, lulz

Hi friend! Nah, I almost never watch random shit on YouTube. I will do more research eventually. For now Im subscribed to 2 homesteading/living off grid publications and reading those monthly for general info/entertainment.

No and no. I am incredibly anal about personal hygiene and hate body hair. Can confidently say I will do neither of those two things. Will likely completely stop wearing makeup (again) though.

in this kind of situation would you be living in some tiny house type deal? trailer? cabin? Would you own a bunch of land?
in my head i idealize the idea of being minimalist and self-sufficient. i don't know how realistic it is, what the set up would be and what kind of financial resources i would need.

No idea. Depends on how the next few years of my life go. Will likely buy a few acres of land w a fixer upper home w barn. Several of my friends live in woods 30-60 mins outside Portland. Realistically i will likely buy a home near them.

"place outside the burbs"
uh, have you been to southern maine? 30-60 mins outside portland is "place outside the burbs" and also many times "in the motherfucking woods" lol :) that being said, i want to be near my friends. a few of them are in windham and a few in buxton. i will likely move near one of those clusters of people but as far into the woods as i can get within ~20 minutes.
also.... if im doing 'cabin in the woods' plus another home id do a condo in portland or sopo and then a cabin

;). i'm a hunter and don't really consider southern maine true wilderness. even northern maine has so many logging roads and clear cuts throughout it. :(. if you can walk a straight line for a few miles you'll eventually hit a road/trail anywhere in maine basically. it's really changed since I was a kid in some spots.

"dont really consider southern maine true wilderness"
i mean... yes, in this thread i was joking about a xoxo compound in true wilderness, but realistically that would never happen. the more likely scenario is that i end up in the woods (parts of windham/buxton and the surrounding towns are rural AF) but within ~15 mins of a small town and 60 mins of portland.
and yes, man's reach has extended deep into our forests. kind of depressing really.

ofs! i totally agree. I LOVE the outdoors. But I think truly being off-grid would be a bit much for most people to handle....myself included. those time differences seem pretty good to me. What are your thoughts on places like Jackman or Millinocket?
Date: October 6th, 2019 1:15 PM Author: Jet Lodge Codepig
ive only been to jackman once, and that was with a close friend of mine to visit her grandmother. seemed like a nice enough place but i didnt do much there so i couldn't tell you much about it. people hunt there a lot right?
ive been to millinocket a few times- a few times for sports & twice to go to baxter state park. its pretty dead now that the mill is shut down, right? i think of millinocket as just one of those generic mill towns that's died over the past 20 years as the paper industry has died in maine. if not for baxter i dont think it would really be worth mentioning these days.
why are you asking me about those two towns in particular? proximity to woods?

you mean as places to live? tbh id be more likely to head either up the coast toward belfast area or into western maine (more near farmington or sugarloaf) than i would head as far north as millinocket or jackman.
