I graduated in May, and I'm now studying for the Bar Exam. I've applied to big, medium and small sized firms and government positions, but I haven't recieved any offers. What really happens to the bottom of the class at T14 schools? I hope some of you could provide me with serious and valuable input.

become a PD or Asst. DA
if you don't suck you gain experience and move up.

very difficult to get da or pd jobs in the ba
Santa Clara pd has their first opening in four years. Even Alameda county da had 200 candidates for 8 openings.

well maybe he should move to where the jobs are.
granted the legal market is oversupplied, but some of those TTT fuck doc reviewers really did bring it on themselves. Instead of struggling to graduate from Cardozo, they could have gone to a decent school in a less "prestigious" state
(i.e. maine, south carolina, oregon) with low COL (and, after first year, lower in-state tuition rates) and worked as a DA for a few years, then as an associate, then opened up a solo practice, then bought a big fucking house w/ a nice pool, picket fence, et cetera.
Let's assume OP went to... UVA/Georgetown? Then he just needs to hop down to Richmond. Duke? Plenty of people need lawyers in Greensboro. Cornell? What about Syracuse.
Instead, these people flood already oversupplied markets (NY, DC, SF) and just nip at the heels of the biglaw lawyers already raking it in.

you aren't getting what I'm saying.
TTT people (i.e. people with no shot of anything paying remotly close to market) are better off doing day-to-day shit (PD only as training, then private) in a small town in a low COL area than doing those shit ass jobs they take at JDJIVE... doc review, 32k for PI firms, et cetera...
This line of reasoning doesn't concern biglaw. I guess I went under the assumption that OP would never have a hope. .. which may not be right.

This post is filled with errors.
"UVA just hop down to Richmond"
Tons of UVA try to do that every year - and fail. There is enough competition that people with bottom 1/2 grades arent getting jobs at decent Richmond firms. Why you idiots think you can just hop to a smaller market and have firms suck you off is beyond me.

Plaintiff's firms pay about 75-90. They don't ask for transcripts, from what I understand. I have a friend from Penn in the bottom 10% (roughly), and he got a job in Chicago making 85k, no transcript required.

I graduated from a top 14 last year. I actually know a few people who still don't have law firm jobs, even after 12 plus months. I know a few who are contract attorneys, like doing document review. I know another one who ended up getting a DA position in the middle of no where. Basically, if you don't have a law firm job lined up at graduation you are pretty much fucked to be honest. You won't get much attention from any big firms cause your grades suck and you have no experience.
Try for government position to get experience and then maybe after 2-4 years you can get into a respectable firm. Otherwise, I'd honestly say you're pretty much fucked unfortunately.

I have a friend who graduated from a t20 with about that average. She ended up at a firm in a small market that she had ties to that paid less than other firms in the market and does business lit but also plaintiff side work. I think she started around $50K, and I don't think she had any 'in' at the firm although they did have a few attorneys from her school. So it sounds like you're taking the right approach.

Go work at insurance defense firm.
Start out at 50-60k.
Learn how to practice law, appear in court, try cases. You'll get more substantive experience there in a year than you would at a BIGLAW firm anyway.
Quit in a year or 2 and lateral to a larger firm. They wont be as concerned about grades, and you'll still have a good school, only know you'll know more than the other associates who are also 2 years out.

Explain this to me. You said 10% of law students can get biglaw. He said 96% of law students are idiots. So, 40% of the people who get biglaw are idiots, assuming that the 6% of law students who are smart get it. Actually, 2% of law students who are smart do something other than biglaw. So, it ends up that 60% of people in biglaw are idiots. Hardly impressive.
I know you are trying to save face, but please, stop.

Yeah there are some top firms like David Polk in NYC or OMM in CA that will still look at grades even after two or three years. If you aren't top 25% you have no fucking chance. It's like that at a lot of Vault 100 firms unfortunately. Grades still matter, even if you went to a top school.
I think the OP's best option is to get a government job or do an LLM and specialize in a specialized practice area. Then his LS grades won't matter that much, but right now he is seriously fucked and will likely end up a contract attorney doing document review.

have you ever worked at a law firm? Almost every corporate case you do ends in settlement.
litigation includes motion practice and settlement, not just "communicating with juries."

"Doc review, as useless as it is, is at least somewhat relevant."
No one gets hired because of doc review proficiency, fuckwit. They get hired because they have skills the other monkeys don't, and monkeys who cannot get BIGLAW out of law school aren't considered by Cravath regardless, unless by "considered" you mean spat upon. In the future, try using applicable examples, as it lends credibility to your posts.

Fine, PD experience isn't going to help you at Stroooooooooooooooooock.
Doc review is the first step towards doing motions and more substantive stuff. Everyone has to go through it.

How is any of that relevant?
PD experience will not help you get a biglaw job. They want people who had good grades, and you will have absolutely no advantage over a 3rd year associate who has done 2 years of doc review because you defended crackheads in state court. in fact, you will be very much behind, which will make it much less likely that you will get hired.

"communicating with juries" is a skill that is required in perhaps 2% of cases that are taken up by large law firms.
Many fulltime partners at law firms never go to trial.
And those who do are handling matters that are so far removed from defending or prosecuting crack heads in state court that any experience doing that will be beyond useless.
PD / DA experience does not make up for bad grades, I'm sorry. And the arrogance you guys have over doc review people is totally misplaced. There is a reason why PDs and DAs get paid so poorly.

None of the partners at my firm ever worked in the PD or the DAs office.
Here is the point you don't get. State experience is useless. You want trial experience law firms care about? Go to the U.S. Attorney's office. But guess what? You can't go there without BIGLaw experience and good grades. That's where the biglaw attorneys get their "communicating with juries" experience. As it turns out, though, that is perhaps the least important part of the job of being a litigator.
And experience at the U.S. Attorney's office is far from required, since most biglaw litigators never go to trial with a jury.

This is wrong. Most all of your cases get settled before trial. If you need to go to trial, you get your US Attorney experienced partners to come in and do it.
This is why the law firms don't hire these people - why would you want a former PD or DA who had bad grades and irrellevant trial exeperience when you can have a former US Attorney who had good grades and is experienced in relevant areas?
