He managed to find a way to pay for the summons, but it was no easy task while keeping up on his rent and other bills. “$100? If had that kind of money I would have bought a weekly MetroCard," said Jose. Jose couldn’t find a police officer, and the woman in the booth said she couldn’t help him, so he jumped the turnstile. “It was getting late, I was desperate to go home,” said Jose. “That’s why I did it, I didn’t do it just because I wanted to.” He barely made it 25 feet before a police officer yelled from down a long hallway for Jose to stop. Jose tried to explain to the officer that he just needed to get home and had been looking for the police to help him. But the officer just asked him for his ID and told Jose that he had broken the law and was under arrest. “You will take me to jail because I don’t have $2.50?” Jose asked the officer “What was I supposed to do? I have no view on the broader report. Is there some means by which poor New Yorkers can get free or reduced subway fare? Seems like there should be.
As to racial disparities, it seems like a pretty easy situation to study/remedy. Just put a camera on the turnstiles at a scientifically significant number of stations and see what it shows. It seems plausible to me that there is an actual unjust disparity. But also plausible the disparate numbers are just due to there being more black fare jumpers — it’s interesting that they focus on Brooklyn where “poor” whites probably include a lot of ortho Jews, etc. |

this isn't about people being arrested for fare jumping, it's about people with other criminal warrants being arrested after police see them fare jumping.
