friend from college. i was curious about the xo hbs meme and asked her about the hbs guys and the social aspect. the following is her response. i swear on my mom's life that this is an actual e-mail. not flaming.

"I've seen a lot of debauchery as well - hookups/open flirtations with people who have SOs/spouses, HBS men picking up college girls/sleeping with tons of people to affirm their preeminent social status, constant drinking/partying... actually I think HBS women often go outside HBS to date because the culture can be so insufferable. And, candidly, I can say I have hooked up with a couple of HBS guys and while I think they are sharp spades, they were some of the most aggressive in terms of getting non-platonic that I've ever seen...

Every weekend is some crazy trip to somewhere, or a conference, etc. Every other weekend doing anything is very very very hard. I have dated two guys who lived in NY, and even that was insane for extended periods of time without the distractions of b-school.

College girls with fake IDs go to the various clubs and bars around Boston. HBS guys often roll places with their section vests/jackets on, and are in huge posses (usually mixed gender), and there's always enough high spenders to get great service, bottles (although not so much a thing as in NYC), etc. Also the Harvard community is sort of unimaginably large, once you count all the roommates, friends, coworkers, etc. of those in it... not that hard to get invited to an HBS party.

I think it suffices to say few HBS people are truly douchey, but I think there's enough groupthink and alcohol when people go out that the non-douchey people usually just stay silent and laugh on the sidelines as the others do their douchey thing. I think most people are probably good eggs who just have naughty inclinations, with a very limited window left in life to indulge (safely) in them.

I think most HBS guys have alpha potential - but, like any pack, put a bunch together and only a few alphas sort out at the very top... then again, not every person finds that desirable. I know I don't. But then, I'm sort of an alpha in my own right and few people really impress me. The most impressive guy I know going to HBS worked at a blue chip tech company and grew up with little privilege, going to a no-name state school in the South. I like him better than the blowhards I've met from GS, Bain, etc. who all sound the same."
