Help Me (Julia) Pick My Next Career

Date: June 27th, 2020 11:24 AM Author: Brilliant Hateful Set Hunting Ground I'm an XO dumb, with mid-160s LSAT scores and a 2.9 ugpa/3.3 graduate gpa. Hispanic female. Looking to switch careers. I'm getting long in the tooth for my line of work (tv/media), and want to do something different in the next phase of my life.
Should I consider 1) Law school 2) PA school, or 3) Speech Language Pathology
The programs I'm looking at all have starting salaries between $100-120k, which is about what I make now, but these are careers I'd be able to do for longer, and perhaps derive more benefit from helping others somehow. Heck, maybe I could make more someday as a lawyer.
Anyhow, I make notoriously poor life choices, so help me out. I will probably need to work until I'm 55-60, so I need to be able to earn $100k plus for another 15-20 years, and I'm smart enough to know my time is quickly passing for my current career.
I could also just go back into corporate work as a VP of Communications somewhere and make closer to $150-175k.

It seems like you might thrive in an environment where you are your own boss and/or can work independently most of the time on technical (but not too technical) work. Periodic interactions with clients for sales or counseling purposes would be okay and could be done well, but you need to manage the pace of those interactions so that you can recharge.
How capable are you of being self-motivated and productive without the accountability of a boss or explicit deadlines?
Edit to add: How much flexibility do you have, given your present circumstances, to take time off for school or to take time to establish a business/practice in a new field? |

There are some really good RIA-in-a-box technology solutions that take care of all of the back end. You could focus exclusively on the sales and counseling. Most updates can be done with email/video.
Could be perfect for a highly attractive woman who can project a business like demeanor and competence with finances. Also too many RIAs just focus on slinging mutual funds, insurance, and other investment products. There’s a real need, especially among the elder Millennials who finally have some money, to get more comprehensive financial advice and they still want the hand holding of a live person. Can they afford that house? That car? How much insurance do they need? Is it time to consider refinancing? On and on.
I think that there’s good demand for this around the Main Line and in the city. |

Imagine yourself at a job interview, answering the question of "what makes you a good fit for this job?" And your past career has to be a seamless part or the answer. Maybe you want to be a speech therapist because before you got your degree, you excelled in public communication and you want to help your patients reach that next level. Maybe you want to be a lawyer and work in pr, reviewing communications (this is very narrow and i am reaching but on the other hand your experience would be a good fit).
It has to all make sense and your experience needs to add value in a concrete way. If all you bring is a law degree they will hire the 28yo with a law degree every time. |

You're in for 3 years and tons of money when you include tuition plus opportunity cost. And the reality is you aren't getting anything decent right of school, even if you got biglaw.
You have to make peace with your existing skills and prospects and maximize them. People who have this grass is greener thing into their 30s and 40s do not do well. They waste time and money and then find their new field also has flaws and doesn't magically fix their life. It just wastes time and money |

PA is a good gig, it's a growing field with a good starting salary, and you can pick the specialty that interests you most. Between these two I would recommend PA over JD 100 times out of 100. |

speech pathology sounds like a flame borderline made up 'career path' that freshman undergrad girls say they're 'interested in' because it sounds kinda good and doesn't tend to produce many follow up questions ... probably because none of their interlocutors know what it is ... probably because it's a total flame borderline made up 'career' |
