I would say similar to calling an Indian "Apu" or saying "Thank you very much" in a quickie-mart voice as opposed to calling them a "dot-curry" or whatever racial slurs are out there for Indians.
Either way it is definitely not good, but I really can't believe macaca is a word in common parliance among southern racists. Not apologizing for him, I think he's going to get a lot of well-deserved heat for the comment, just my take on exactly what it meant. |

At the same time, it does seem to be a term that gets around in some white supremacist circles (see Stormfront posts).
I just have a hard time believing that a politician, knowing that he's being video taped at a campaign stop, would knowingly direct a racial slur directly at the person doing his opponent's video taping. |

My opinion is that the "Welcome to America" was completely benign. The macaca was at least mean spirited, but I don't yet buy that he intentionally/knowingly used it as a racial slur. |

As someone who is Indian, Republican, a huge Davis supporter, and (formerly) a casual Allen supporter, I am a little bit upset at Senator Allen and let me explain why. First of all, I do understand that we all make jokes and I am not advocating political correctness. I watch the Simpson’s just like everyone else and I can definitely take a good natured joke. I make fun of my own people all the time. But the problem here is that Senator Allen appears to be picking on someone in a mean and malicious way. He appears to be singling out this person in front of a crowd that is presumably mostly white and he thinks that this is going to somehow score him political points. Now, if Senator Allen were making fun of the guy cause he was a Webb staffer, that would be different. But he goes above and beyond that. In other words, it’s the tone, spirit, and context of the situation that has me upset. I should add that Senator Allen was one of the first Senators to speak out in favor of renewing the Voting Rights Act this year. He has also been a co-sponsor of Hate Crimes legislation. It’s not my place to judge whether Senator Allen is a racist or not. I don’t know his heart and unlike the left, I don’t believe in instinctively attributing all events to race or class. Political correctness is not what I am advocating here. But having said that, you can’t be dumb enough to say what Senator Allen said. Our country and the GOP have both come a really, really long way when it comes to race relations. Thirty years ago, we sat at segregated tables. Today, many minorities own their own businesses. That can only happen in America, or “the city on a shining hill”, as President Reagan used to call it. However, Senator Allen’s comments should remind everyone that you don’t just ask people for their vote. Rather, you have to earn it. Unfortunately, I will not be supporting Senator Allen in his bid for the US Senate, nor his bid for the Presidency. The fact is that the Senator has a staff that is incredibly arrogant, to put it kindly. I can’t tell you how many Republicans I know that feel that way. Also, the Senator comes across, as one of my good GOP friends from New York likes to say, as a person who is ” as genuine as a three dollar bill”. I know Senator Allen loves to use football analogies. The Senator may think he scored a touchdown with his conservative base when he made those unfortunate remarks. Unfortunately, the reality is that he threw an ill timed interception- one that may cost him dearly in the 2008 Super Bowl that is the Presidential election. —Terpsfan4life |

They pulled their pick-up truck over to the fence and the plan was for (the late) Mr. Pernicky (who was 100 pounds heavier than Mr. Hawkins) to hop the fence and then assist his friend over. Unfortunately for (the late) Mr. Pernicky, there was a 30-foot drop on the other side of the fence. Having heaved himself over, he found himself crashing through a tree. His fall was abruptly halted (and broken, along with his arm, as it were) by a large branch that snagged him by his shorts. Dangling from the tree with a broken arm, he looked down and saw some bushes below him. (Possibly) figuring the bushes would break his fall, he removed his pocket knife and proceeded to cut away his shorts to free himself from the tree.
Finally free, Mr. Pernicky crashed into Holly bushes. The sharp leaves scratched his ENTIRE body and now without the protection of his shorts, a Holly branch penetrated his rectal cavity. To make matters worse (?), on landing, his pocket knife penetrated his thigh 3-inches. (The late) Mr. Hawkins, on seeing his friend in considerable pain and agony, decided to throw him a rope and pull him to safety (now he thinks of the S word) by tying the rope to the pick-up truck and slowly driving away. However, in his drunken haste/state, he put the truck into reverse and crashed through the fence, falling 30 feet in the truck and landing on his friend and killing him.
Police arrived to find the crashed pick-up with its driver thrown 100-feet from the truck and dead at the scene from massive internal injuries. Upon moving the truck, they found John under it, half-naked with scratches on his body, a holly stick in his rectum, a knife in his thigh, and his shorts dangling from a tree branch 25-feet in the air. |

On the other hand it's completely indefensible. Even believing MDH's scenario above, its nowhere close to the clerk's scenario, because in the clerk's scenario the dood didn't know the term had anything to do with race. In the Allen scenario, that's totally unbelievable. He may have thought it was an okay term to use (maybe something like calling an african american black) but the way he used it would have been totally unacceptable even if that was the case. You don't call someone "blackie, or whatever your name is" and think that's, you know, cool. ever. That's not even really so much of an issue or racism as much as it is just being a respectful human fucking being. |

Romney's explanation for his remark -- that he meant the Big Dig was a "sticky mess" -- makes sense given the context, even if the term does have nasty racial connotations (which he concievably didn't know of). His sentence wouldn't make any sense if he had meant "tar baby" as a racial slur.
Dean's remark, while un-PC and ill-advised, isn't racist at all. The GOP is disproportionately white, and hotel staffs are disproportionately black and Hispanic.
Steele's opponents pelting him with Oreos is disgusting, and should've received more coverage than it did. I suspect the reason it didn't is because Americans are less sensitive about black-on-black racial stereotyping than they are about white-on-black racial stereotyping. Which makes sense.
Allen just flat-out called an Indian American kid a racial slur. It's an obscure term, but one which he has every reason to know given his background. I'm not sure if it'll get more coverage than the other stuff, but it should -- especially given his weirdo history on race. |

I did my grad studies at Duke. In one of my classes, there were 3 chinese students, myself (Indian male, foreign student), one Indian girl and one white male. This WM person was from Virginia. His family had a construction business there. That's about what I know about this person. After a midterm test, the instructor gave us our graded answer sheets. When the class was over, we were all talking about the test. This person from Virginia turned to me and said "How did the macaca do?" I was shocked and so was the Indian girl in the class. I let it go. As the course progressed, it was clear that he was not keeping up his grades and the more he seemed to perform poorly, the more aggressive and racist he got towards all of us in the class. He frequently referred to me as "the macaca" and "the monkey". Did I say he was from Virginia?
Now fast forward 2 years. I was travelling in Virginia and West Virginia with other grad students from Duke (mostly Indian, male, foreign students). We were coming out of a convenience store (gas station) near Wheeling. Two white males in a pick-up truck saw us, and started shoouting at us. Initially we couldn't figure what they were saying. Then it was clear that they were insulting us and I heard "macaca" among the slurs thrown at us (with a good measure of "go back to your country").
From my experience, it seems to me that it is quite possible that "macaca" is a racial slur used by some groups (perhaps in VA and WV) against black/brown skinned people.
One other thing. That racist in my class? He dropped out of the course and quit his grad studies and went back to Virginia. |
