The firefighters on Sept. 11 hurt more than they help

Their wide, tedious gear clogged up narrow stairwells, and once the firefighters got up there, they didn't actually do anything useful.
Why is it still taboo to point out this well-established fact? The firefighters may have been brave in many cases, but they sure didn't help the overall situation. In fact, by slowing down the evacuation, they hurt a lot, and got people killed.

they evacuated hundreds of people who were in shock or unable to get out by themselves, they removed countless obstacles on the floors. hundreds of injured people came pouring out of the upper floors. had the building lasted longer they would have saved thousands of more lives.
firefighters go in to put out fires. you can't blame them for not thinking "hey, the building's going to collapse anyways, lets get some lunch and come back and clean this shit up"

Those are largely myths. Read the report by the National Institute of Standards on the collapse of the towers:
http://wtc.nist.gov/pubs/
Due to the narrowness of the stairwells, all those ascending firefighters dramatically slowed down the progress of the evacuees. For the most part, people helped themselves. The firefighters should have set up a triage chain in the lobby, extending from the stairwell's bottom to arriving ambulances.

you have an unstable definition of "misleading."
it's "misleading," according to you, to mention the perverse effects of the firefighters' actions, since it distracts from their heroism.
on the other hand, you chastise this other poster who says it's "misleading" to focus exclusively on their heroism, since it distracts from the harm they caused.
so really what you're saying is you care solely about the heroism. that's your primary value. to you, anything else is "misleading" as against it, because it tends to denigrate the virtue of their intentions. is this correct?

The semantics or truth of the original statement is not at issue. Sometimes true statements are rude and inappropriate. Most children begin to understand this around age 6-10.
You and OP are pathetic and worthy of zero respect.

There's some truth to that. If your intention is to educate fire departments on correct emergency protocol than please go in person to the the appropriate people and let the facts be known.
If your intention is to flame for your amusement (as is evident) at the expense of people who died rather heroically - then you are real life scum.
HTH.

Nothing. Although the only relevant and useful way to promote such a policy would be to do so IRL rather than anonymously on XOXO. The manner in which this 'observation' was made suggests flame rather than an attempt to be helpful.
How has this factoid helped anyone by being posted here?

The original poster is flaming, but he is technically right on this point. An analysis of the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993 showed that most injuries were caused by evacuating down staircases carrying smokes from the raging fires in the basement. Consequently, a new strategy of "defend in place" was substituted for the "evacuate immediately" strategy then in place. No one was planning for a catastrophic attack like that on 9/11/01, just regular fires and maybe a bomb here or there.
On 9/11/01, few thought that the towers were at risk of collapse. Initially, victims were told to stay in place to avoid the smoke in the stairwells and to await rescuers carrying proper breathing equipment. The stairways were too small and the firefighters going up slowed down the people going out.
Nevertheless, the firefighters, police officers, and rescue personnel acted with great heroism on that day. The original poster just wanted to get some of the attention he is denied in real life, so he consciously ignores that obvious truth.

In a related note, my mom just watched World Trade Center last week, and realized that her first boyfriend from high school in brooklyn was one of the 20 firefighters who were in the WTC when in collapsed but were pulled from the rubble and survived.
She just told me about this 2 minutes ago. strange.
