My 12 year old taught himself Calculus and Linear Algebra since June. Autistic?

does he really understand it? anyone can learn the derivative of x^3 is 3x^2, or row reduce a matrix. But does he understand what the derivative measures, or what a linear transformation actually is.
if he's not getting good grades at school, i'm guessing he's either bored with assignments and isn't trying. but if he's also not doing well on the basic exams (which emphasize some basic computations), then he probably doesn't get what's going on, and has only tricked himself into thinking he gets calculus and linear algebra.
i wouldn't be too surprised if he understands bits and pieces of calculus, but linear algebra is a bit more abstract, and i would be pleasantly surprised if he grasps the concept of a vector space, isomorphism, kernel, etc.

A lot of fake "geniuses" touted by the media (esp if the quote "genius" is URM) can parrot a bit about calculus, etc., but none have a real understanding. Media usually describes them as having a "higher IQ than Einstein."

“At the London recital there was much amazement at Deutscher’s poise and skill,” Wroe writes. He doesn’t mention what the exact markers for these traits are. Do they come across through her well-bred appearance, or the satisfying incongruity of a child confidently entering the realm of the adult? In an interview with VAN, the violinist Christian Tetzlaff says, “I can understand why people are amazed by a 10-year-old juggler at the circus. But in music, it’s not about ability.”
The music critic Janice Nimura sees our fascination with child prodigies yet more cynically. She tells Solomon, “The child prodigy is the polite version of the carny freak. Gawking at the dog-faced boy in the sideshow is exploitative, but gawking at the six-year-old pianist on the ‘Today’ show is somehow okay, even inspiring, demonstrating just how high human potential can soar.”

College student called "genius" for doing basic trig. Guess race.
You know when you zone out in math class and wonder, when will I ever actually use this in real life? Well, one genius college student actually found a pretty sick way to make trigonometry cool again: she calculated the angle of her dab.
It all started on Friday afternoon, when Anicca Harriot, a 20-year-old student at Regent University in Virginia, took a walk through a park near campus with her friends between classes. They took this picture:

here is my advice for your son:
get him into community college classes ASAP. if he can get As in Calc I-III and Linear Algebra before he turns 15, he may be on track to take grad school math classes by senior yr of HS. don't let him skip a grade or miss out on sports. the only aspect of his life that should differentiate himself from his peers are the math classes he's enrolled in. taking grad school classes in hs at your local BIG STATE U would put him ahead of 95% of freshmen at HYPS. if he comes through this with As and has a near perfect SAT, he should get a free ride to most state schools.
