Sadly, this is from an admitted student (admission standards??) regarding HLS v. YLS:

"Are we not friendly here or something? It was a pretty simple decision for me. Have you been to New Haven? Someone has already said it blows. That's an understatement. This may seem trivial, but if your choice is between two relatively equal schools, one of which, lets face it, is in one of the best towns in the country and the other is one that is based in a slum, you might want to consider it. Moreover, even though the schools have their relative strengths and weaknesses, Yale has always been the redheaded Ivy League stepchild to Harvard. Its Harvard. How many books have they written about Yale? How many movies are filmed about Yale? And whats all this about the school being huge? My high school was bigger than Harvard Law and I knew everyone there and often wished there were more to choose from. Also, don't buy this bullshit about Harvard people being evil meanies while Yale students are little angels, fluttering about the campus with truth, justice, equality, fairplay, and

friendship bubbling up in their heart. I'm pretty sure the type of people who go to Harvard and Yale are very similiar, and on a personal note, the one person I know at Yale is a total bitch. Basically I think it comes down to this. If you want to be a law professor and want a slight edge despite the cultural downside, go to Yale. In any other case, Harvard is the place to be."

I think all of this is pretty true, except for the "books and movies" stuff, which is stupid, and the final sentence, which underestimates the advantages of Yale (and its significant edge in academia *and* firm hiring). But he's right about Yale's location, and he's right that the differences between the people at the two schools are usually overstated.

New Haven isn't the most exciting city on the planet, but it's not really a "slum" either. The grading system is a legitimate plus as well.

That said, Harvard has its own advantages, and any admit to either of these fine schools who has THIS much of a chip on his/her shoulder about the distinctions is clearly suffering from some problems with insecurity.

hey there - i'll look into the passes to the hockey games. they usually sell season tickets first and then they offer packages where you can buy 5, 10, or 20 games at a discount. i'll keep you posted.

i'm seriously concerned about the people on the message board, though. most of them have affirmed the stereotype of a harvard law student. when i went out to visit stanford, everyone seemed so much cooler.

How did you pick HLS?

I was scared at the admitted weekend and the board just confirms it.

Wanna play hooky for three years? We can do Sox games in the spring, Pats in the fall, Bruins in the winter.

HLS was a lot closer to friends and family than SLS. I also want to end up on the east coast. My fin aid package from H was also more generous and I just couldn't turn it down. I actually didn't go to admit weekend, but I've heard mixed things. Hooky sounds like a great idea.

I think all the fighting is hilarious. Particularly from the chick who admitted that she called her friends about the Southern guy who made jokes about Yale. I mean, if you think about it, there are about 15 people who regularly post to the thing, and of those folks, 5 or 6 are the ones that send out angry posts. So I think its hardly representative. And is it any worse that XOXO?

I think prison rules apply here for some people. A few of the more dogmatic types want to kick someone's ass as a first impression so everyone knows they're tough. But I really think that once we arrive, fall into our sections, and see each other on a daily basis folks will moderate their tone when discussing sensitive issues.

Look at bateman: "This post is so pretentious. maybe I should avoid Harvard"

Yeah right. You know you're still going to Harvard despite the kinds of people that are there.

For heaven's sake, don't worry! If you want to be happy and have a social life at HLS, you WILL. Don't let three assholes on some internet board convince you that 550 other people in the class are all the same.

Perhaps message boards should be outlawed. I am the notorious prick who is glad to meet other pricks, and who is apparently less notorious then Brett, who is a Republican, and hence probably the product of a bad upbringing, and should be forgiven for his sins (his post on the HLS board started this all)...

I came here looking for Stanford students, but this is fascinating... is it worse to be one of the 5 or 6 people on that board who are probably wackos, or to come to another board to talk about those wackos and how much you dread the next 3 years because there can't possibly be anyone cool in a class of 550.

The real reason I'm still considering Harvard is because in a class of 550, you're going to meet everyone, and diversity is always a strength, even if it that means a diverse variety of assholes. People you dislike can often challenge you, if you let them... or, as another poster on the HLS board rejoined, quoting Winston Churchill (I'm paraphrasing):

"You have enemies? Good. It means that somewhere, sometime in your life, you have stood up for something."

Dear Notorious P.R.I.C.K. (yes, I'm joking),

You might want to ask Faye Deal for an invite to the SLS class of 2007 message board. It's not especially busy (it has less than 150 messages), but it'll give you a sense of the type of people that will be in our class.

Good luck with your decision,

I am sick and tired of hearing people who are going to Harvard complaining about the quality of people. Never say everyone when you are included in the group and the statement does not apply to you. I went to the first admitt weekend, and I met a lot of great people, funny people, and crazy people. And I didn't meet anyone stuck up or anything like the stereotypical "Harvard" student. I have come to this conclusion: the world is what you make it. You find what you are looking for. If you expect to meet rude people and have no friends when you attend school, you won't. However, I strongly believe that Harvard will be, for me, a great time and full of great people. Because that is what I am looking for, I have already begun to find it! (I talk to one student I met at admitt weekend via telephone on a regular basis.) If you make sure it isn't you who is really stuck up, you should be alright...

I think that everyone realizes what you are saying is true, but people all have their own reasons why they wont admit this. Sometimes its a defense mechanism for the times when people get all crazy when you tell them your going to hls. so you pretend your miserable there. A lot of students actually do this. The director of admissions at HLS told me he sees students doing it all the time, and he hates it because it gives HLS a bad name.

Ive already met a bunch of cool people who will be at HLS. Im sure that the majority of hte people there will be totally normal, with a few assholes thrown in for good measure.

i knew very few people 1L year (excluding exam time) who didn't enjoy being there...just don't get caught up in all the hype and go crazy studying rather than enjoying yourself...do what you have to do to do well and enjoy being 24 (or however old you are)
