After 3-4 years practicing large debtor side restructuring for one of the major players (K&E, WG, Skadden), what kind of opportunities would an associate have as an option to BIGLAW life? It seems a lot of the work would make good training for an in-house counsel position (and GC down the road) but what else is there?

Would one be marketable to PE firms and hedge funds that specialize in distressed company investing? Would their role be a principal or as a lawyer? What would the work be like?

Anything else to contribute regarding young associate life in the restructuring group? I hear the hours can be pretty bad and life can get stressful but on the other hand there's a lot of action, chances for early responsibility and the practice walks the line between transactional/litigation work...

Good question. I don't have too much experience with this but I've definitely seen bankruptcy lawyers move over to distressed debt funds as a principal after working at those types of firms. So it must be somewhat possible.

An exit to distressed investing/pe as a principal is definitely possible, as is an exit to investment banks/advisors that specialize in restructuring advisory (i.e. Miller Buckfire, Alix Partners, etc). It's probably easiest if you have some finance work experience as well (i.e. if you were an investment banking analyst before going to law school), but I don't think that's essential if you can demonstrate good business understanding in your interview.

I work in the BK group for one of the firms you mentioned. In the past year, we had an associate (2000 grad) go into UBS's distressed group as an Associate, and a non-equity partner join Quadrangle as a VP. We also had a senior partner go over to Golman Sachs as an MD -- but that's a little further out than you were talking.
