the refund I just got was almost exactly what I had just paid in January. (I guess this was actually a 4Q payment not a 1Q payment).
Is this a possibly justifiable mistake that can be explained by him making a conservative estimate? Or just a total fuckup that can only result from now knowing what you're doing

yeah I think this is what happened
doesn't make any sense because I made more money in '23 than '22 so I expected a payment if anything - but he did know that, so maybe he overcompensated?
my real concern is the CPA isn't really looking at this and is sloughing it all off to his female "bookkeeper" like a shitlawyer signing a complaint his paralegal drafted

From what sources is your income? W2? 1099? K1?
How much do you pay this CPA whose personal attention you expect to command?
How much did you pay in January and how big is the refund?

rule of thumb: if you're not fucking rich, then if you can (reasonably) afford some sort of tax/financial professional help, chances are that it's going to be at least moderately incompetent.
and if you've got typical xo poaster intelligence, you could probably do at least equal to, if not a better, job, given some modest organizational skills and a willingness to spend a few hours learning some shit and giving a fuck.
I work in "retail" tax compliance with regular folks/small businesses and i am constantly aghast at the quality of the "advice" that my clients have received before from purportedly licensed CPAs/enrolled agents. It's retards all the way down unless 1) you get really lucky or 2) you're operating at a level where you can hire a Big4 firm to handle your shit.

I might do this
as for how much I pay him idk. He sends me an invoice and I pay it. If its not enough to make it worth his "personal attention" I guess he should charge more
but at this point, worst case scenario I could just crib his work from previous years. it's not like anything changes yty, just the actual figures go up or dowm
